Another Zrk2 LP? I believe that I will have to post to watch. Also, I've voted for Empire:Total War, mostly because it's one of the few Total War games I don't know much about.

I've always been fond of Ottomans, unless they gimp you too much. Ottoman Empire and Poland would both be interesting to see played out.

Empire is derping way the fuck out, so instead I'm going to play the closest thing I have. Medieval II: Total War, 1648 Mod. This mod covers the 30 Year's War in amazing detail, and it's also highly stable. I haven't played it much, but I have enjoyed it. We can choose from most major factions involved in the fighting. This period is known as the 'pike and shot' period, and one can get a taste of it in the extreme late game of Medieval II vanilla. The forum the thread I linked to has many wonderful threads describing how battles work in this mod, and I'll do my best to showcase the differences as we progress.

I was thinking the Union of Utrecht (Netherlands) to start because they are a faction I know and generally enjoy learning about. We start in a good position with our backs to the Sea and a very strong economy. Our biggest enemy to begin will be Habsburg Spain, whom we have already been fighting as part of the 80 Year's War. The map is huge and it will take a long time to get anywhere so updates may be slow as it can honestly take more than 10 turns before we even encounter a force from the Habsburgs, and it usually takes 3-4 turns to march from one city to another.

Wanna tell you a story about a woman I know.
She ain't exactly pretty, she ain't exactly small...

Oh wait, not Rosie. I meant the Netherlands. The Netherlands exist just northwest of Germany.


While they were only peripherally involved in The 30 Year's War proper they were, of course, a major participant in the 80 Year's War against Habsburg Spain, which was a major player in the 30 Year's War. Combine that with their c;lose proximity to The Little Germanies and that guarantees them a spot in this fantastic mod.

As Jefferson knew it took a strong economy to field a strong military.


And we have a very strong economy.


We start with fewer cities than some other factions, but our cities are wealthy and we don't have a huge army mired in the middle of nowhere. This leaves us free to act as we see fit, and, more importantly, to build the army we want.

One of the glories of this mod is the detail of everything. In only the first 10 turns we've already learned all this.

To start with we try to open relations with our bordering factions, but no one wants to openly oppose the Emperor or his Spanish cousins yet, so we settle for opening trade.


Our royal family is growing.


And our dear Stadtholder has married.


I have begun assembling two armies. One will follow the coast down, and the other will march south, allowing us to move like a pincer. Eventually one will swing towards the other and sweep the Austrians between them out. TREACHERY!

The bastard will pay for this...

The Spaniards, tired of war, offer us a compromise, but I refuse to live under the Catholic yoke.

NETHERLANDS STRONK! GIB BACK DUTCH CLAY! REMOVE HABSBURG FROM PREMISES!

We have arrived at our first siege.


Inside is nothing but pikemen. The battle was actually incredibly boring and you couldn't see what was happening, so I won't show it. We did win handily, though.


It's a nice city and we set about making it useful.


On the coast we are able to march into a city. Wonderful.

It's just taking out some lonely pikemen, but I thought I would take the chance to show you some units.

Here we see a Regiment of Foot (pike):

They are the heavy lifters and will feature time and again in our battles.

Next up we have a Regiment of Foot (shot):

We will also see these time and again as they are our standard musketeer. There are others, and mercenaries (which are plentiful and cheap, so to reflect the mercenary based aspect of this period) which have better stats, though.

The Fall of the Spanish Netherlands

We choose to go our own way here, and end the war with Austria.


So naturally they send two full stacks in.


Poland starts screwing around in the east.


The Austrians make gains reclaiming Bohemia.


I odn't know what this did, but it was interesting.

Following the events mentioned above our list of enemies has shifted.


And the country is aflame.


Fortunately the French are more interested in taking the Habsburgs down a notch or two than they are in conquering us. So we accept.


WAR! The Electorate of Cologne has attacked us.


The battle for Antwerpt was another mess of pikes in streets, and thoroughly uninteresting to look at.

It has been quiet because of the vast distances between cities, but with Cologne coming at us and my armies out of position it should get more entertaining.
