Hopefully this game will go on sale on steam before summer vacation starts.  This game looks boat-tastic.
...I really need to work on that, don't I?

How good is this game when only playing by yourself?  And How much does lag impact the multiplayer portion?

Lag doesn't matter, it's turn-based. Sort of. Think Toribash, you give orders for the next few seconds (10 in this case) and press okay, and then it happens.

The singleplayer is alright. Sometimes it's surprisingly hard, sometimes easier than you'd think.

Lag is non-existent.  The game is turn based, which means that lag of 10 seconds won't really change gameplay at all.  It even includes options for long-term games, with rounds auto-completing after 30 seconds to 7 days - that is, if you haven't made your turn, the game will make a move anyways after this time.  So there's options for people who aren't even on at the same time.

I have an Atlas with 6 fore-mounted railguns.

It's probably the most overspecialized ship ever. I don't care. If it hits anything less than a capital ship, that ship will die.
I did the same thing.  Getting it to fire straight is a real challenge though...

Also, don't try artillery.  It's got really weird range increments.

Alright, I take that back.  Used correctly (4 player maps) artillery can hit HARD.  Majickero suffered 3 arty hits to his leviathan and because of it I didn't lose a single ship, had one down to like 50 hp...

I played around with my ships after my crushing defeat at the hands of Girlinhat. Large battles are essentially Capital Ship fights. I approached my battles with Girlinhat as a medium battle, with screens and scouts. I got a face full of lots of guns in less ships.

Small battles, haven't tried those yet.

Quite a nice game. More weapons or hull types would be nice.

The problem is the disjoint in sizes and costs.  Hulls cost quite a bit, really, and it's cheaper to mount a lot of guns on a single hull than to field a lot of boats.  That also means that any 1v1 fight, the large ship is going to shred the smaller ships, so the only real way to compete is to get ALL your small ships into combat at the same time, otherwise they get picked off one at a time.

Plus, ships are very big.  And maps are very small.  Handling 4 ships vs 4 ships on a 4 player map is crowded.  Islands are MASSIVE and on the 2 player maps you're basically restricted to lasers as your primary weapons - artillery minimum range is almost beyond the edge of the map!  This means that ships get clustered and bottlenecked easily, it's not often your swarm of ships get to all attack simply because they can't all get around an island at the same time.  So your large ships tend to brute their way through small swarms, while small ships just become a layer on the sea floor.

EDIT: Holy crap rockets are OP. I just obliterated a medium fleet with 1 rocket ship and 3 lightly armed scouts. Didn't lose a single ship.

So my first online game was a bit of a disaster.  8000 point limit, 2 vs 2.  I got paired with someone who had 2 atlases equipped with only a radar each, a dreadnought equipped with only close range lasers, and a scout equipped with only smoke grenades.  We were kinda outgunned :p

(admittedly we'd probably have still lost if they'd brought some firepower - we all spawned too far apart for it to really be 2 vs 2, it was more two sets of 1 vs 1, and I lost mine)

Plus 5 minute timer on turns seems excessive for a game you only typically have 3 or 4 units to give orders to - or at least it felt that way when my teammate apparently went afk once it was clear we'd lost.

Any thoughts on the longevity of this? Are there any unlocks or permanent upgrade - stuff like you see in MOBAs?
