Sure this isn't Attention Deficit Disorder, similar to ADHD?

The two main topics which keep arising is self-diagnosis and excessive labeling, I feel there is nothing wrong with self diagnosis when there are such glaring symptoms which cripple your life

I've had depression for about 6 years and I've recently got meds for it but they don't work. At worst I have been three weeks at home and got out of breath from just thinking about my future. My problems really are horrible loneliness and fears. Fighting suidical thoughts every day.

As for 'everything is a disorder' attitude: both sides are right. Partially.

The thing about most disorders is that they are what would normally be a character quirk up to eleven (to use TVTropes/Spinal Tap terminology).

So, if you tend to worry a lot, it is not necessarily an Anxiety Disorder. On the other hand, if your anxiety reaches pathological levels, it may be. If you are kinda sad over a prolonged period, it is not necessarily Depression. If you are 'sad' over a prolonged period, unable to get out of it, and/or you have suicidal thoughts, it probably is.

Also note that being depressed =/= equal just being 'very very sad'; depression is way more complex than that, I do not posess much knowledge to speak about anxiety disorders, but I suspect they, likewise, might be more than meets the eye.

As for myself, if I got someone actively trying to diagnose me with something at all, my bet would go to Paranoia or, more accurately, PPD. In fact, I could probably pass the required number of symptoms needed to diagnose me as such, but I would suspect (:P) this would be disease-mongering. Yes, I am somewhat irrationally suspicious of others' motivations, secretive (why am I telling this to you? Because I don't think it's sensitive information. You will never know about THAT), as some may have noticed jumpy when someone attacks me and all that jazz that is, to a degree, abnormal.

I, however, lack the more severe symptoms, and diagnosing from the rest is like diagnosing HIV from flu-like symptoms. In other words, you would only come up with it if you believed I had the disorder in the first place.

I think personality disorders as a dubious concept for the most part, TBH.

Isn't something just worth classifying as a disorder if it has an unavoidable negative impact on your life?

There's no such thing as bread! Bread is simply flour in different shapes and sizes. Bread is a dubious concept. I am always baffled by people's need to classify flour in different bread categories!

Psychologists need customers to pay their bills too you know.

"Paranoid - Guarded, defensive, distrustful and suspiciousness. Hypervigilant to the motives of others to undermine or do harm. Always seeking confirmatory evidence of hidden schemes. Feels righteous, but persecuted."

You sound paranoid... maybe you just need some prozac?

There are enough disorders to pick and choose from that i'm sure everyone on this forum could go to a psychologist and leave with some "one size fits all" disorder.

For example one guy i used to go (forced to be more exact) diagnosed me with depression right on the spot and prescribed me some PILLZ!
Check what are those later that day and what do i see? Those were glorified prozac...
God i wish i could get a job like that... just sit a quarter of a day and prescribe psychoactives to everyone stupid enough to visit me AND get paid at least several times (if not more) more than i ever did.

PS: I voted depression because i'm apparently depressive.

Uhm, what did you expect to get for depression? Prozac is, or at least started as, a drug for depression. It's not like he gave you a sugar pill, you got the drug that was designed to combat what you were diagnosed with.

I find it slightly amusing that the preferred method of dealing with a biochemical imbalance is taking drugs which cause biochemical imbalance except tipped it's a different kind of imbalance, but I guess it kinda-sorta makes sense. That aside:

If you go to a psychologist/psychiatrist, the general assumption is that you have a problem that makes you actually go to him. So, if you have some sort of a problem that makes you go see a psychologist and you exhibit some apparently abnormal behavior, it is not too hard to assume the latter leads to the former. The veracity of that conclusion is debatable, but you can see the logic nonetheless.

You do sound depressive, or at least highly negativistic, and your general attitude towards psychiatry points to being either in denial about it, or being a Scientologist.

This just in, death is now a disorder.  Also: taxes.

In regards to the first paragraph, this is certainly relevant.  Especially the part near the bottom about Maurice K. Temerlin.  Also, and let's be fair about it, society (at least American society) has been shaped in such a way that everyone thinks "ohmygod there's something about me that slightly deviates from normal!  I must have something wrong with me!  I need to go see a psychiatrist so he can tell me what disorder I have and give me pills for it!"

As to the second point, one can be critical of psychiatry without being a Scientologist.

Quote
The essential features of a personality disorder are impairments in
personality
(self and interpersonal) functioning and the presence of
pathological personality traits. To diagnose a personality disorder,
the following criteria must be met:

A. Significant impairments in self (identity or self-direction) and
interpersonal (empathy or intimacy) functioning.
B. One or more pathological personality trait domains or trait facets.
C. The impairments in personality functioning and the individual‟s
personality trait expression are relatively stable across time and
consistent across situations.
D. The impairments in personality functioning and the individual‟s
personality trait expression are not better understood as
normative for the individual‟s developmental stage or socio-
cultural environment.

E. The impairments in personality functioning and the individual‟s
personality trait expression are not solely due to the direct
physiological effects of a substance (e.g., a drug of abuse,
medication) or a general medical condition (e.g., severe head
trauma).
My whole beef with the notion is that it seems too close for comfort to a cultural judgement of subjective values , a technical way of saying someone is a misfit. Plus, by their very nature there's not much in the way of effective treatment. So yeah,  I can't help but find it kind of futile, almost closer to social sciences than to psychiatry proper.
(before anyone asks about or misinterpretates this, I'm utterly respectful of biopsychiatry, the scientific method, and the role of medication in psychiatrical and neuropsychiatrical disorders. It's the more "ethereal" concepts that bother me)
