That's (the temps are) only because of our archaic electronics & biological engineering technology.
Thermal conductivity isn't a problem if it's on the inside of the body.
Tensile strength is useful in the form of horizontal bands.

Also: Shh, I want to hear GWG's reasoning first.

The problem is, there's no way to code life to make those chemical processes that can be conceived, so it violates suspension of disbelief.
......................You're demanding we conceive the chemical processes to create the carbon fibers. Lovely.
You look at an enzyme, one that is already coded for. You modify it. If it does what you want it to, mess with the code until the right modified enzyme is produced. Repeat. String these together, and you get a chemical process. We do have a place to start, and we're still assuming this research hasn't been done in-game yet. Genetic modification isn't the same as phlogiston and the speed of light- one's actually a field of technology, something that can improve with time. Like if we went to the future.
That's like saying you could turn a HAM radio into an automobile by tinkering with it a bit--technically true, but not remotely practical.
And I'm pointing out that basically saying "It's the FUTURE, anything could happen!" is inherently stupid.

Quote
You realize, you're going to have to do this for your ectotherm idea, right?
Why? There are actually ectotherms in nature, and the lack of anything like carbon-fiber-assembling enzymes in nature is the whole reason I'm protesting it!

Quote
Quote
It's more about doubting the possibility of making up entirely new genes which work at all despite not remotely resembling anything in nature.
Already stated: we wouldn't have started from scratch.
Why not?

Quote
Also: we don't know the state of electronics tech yet.
...Which is germane, how?

Quote
Quote
...How are the carbon fibers built? That's the part that's not working.
Can you please explain why.
BECAUSE THERE'S NO BASIS FOR THAT AT ALL IN NATURE.
You can't build a space shuttle without knowing how airplanes work.

Quote
-edit
Also, I think that technically, diamonds, graphite & coal are found naturally.
...So? So are uranium, plasma, and magma, but I don't think even you could claim we could make an organism that manufactures those.

Quote
-edit
I made a picture of what I meant with the carbon fiber formation scaffolding thing.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Care to explain what's going on there? It looks like you're trying to have some some atoms (nitrogen and hydrogen?) push the carbon atoms together, but aside from my doubt that you'd try to push that as an explanation, the non-carbon atoms seem to be crumbling. So, please explain.

Guys, we are collectively being dumb as hell about this...
Computers like that may exist...on Earth. We're on a new colony world.
That said, determine what computing power we have at our disposal.

That's (the temps are) only because of our archaic electronics & biological engineering technology.
It's possible, so I'm going to focus on other parts of the argument, but I can't help but notice that your arguments seem to have a lot of "It's the FUTURE, anything can happen!" in them.

Seems like it easily could be. Care to explain?

I think that this conversation has probably run its course. Folk have had their say and it all comes down the the G.M.'s whim anyway...

It's easy to calculate how much computing power we have using moors law if we know the year. I bet our *socks* have enough computing power to run the simulation.

You're assuming that Moore's Law holds 100% true no matter what physical limitations will eventually come up.

I think the general consensus is to get a more detailed understanding of what we have--specifically, computing power--and to try some of our ideas out for practicality.

Computing power is low at the current time, capable of running a biological simulation at low detail, however it would take a long time. Longer than doing the experiment in real life.

try some of our ideas out for practicality.

I've already voted for RAM's proposal.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

@scelly
What's the weather like? Is pressure .75 atm, or 25% lower than the minimum pressure humans can adapt to?

@RAM
Increased body temp somewhere in the creaturs plox?

@GWG
I agree with you on moore's law btw, assuming it will go like that forever is bull.

That's a total of ten creatures. All you have is three growth tanks, and one forced growth one.

I vote for titan, black lagoon & dragon. Ignore gender. Add increased optimal temperature adaptation to the black lagoon creature.
Have our assistants monitor the growth tanks, & help with the designing stuff.

Btw @ scelly:
What's the weather like? Is pressure .75 atm, or 25% lower than the minimum pressure humans can adapt to?
Are we currently dealing with 2g in our facility?
