*Sigh* After thinking it over, I'll have to rule no nanites, this just has the potential to cause too much issues.

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

....well, you guys can vote on a new specialty, or we can do a different char(massive retocn, but hey). Personally, reconning the specialty is the least headache-inducing thing....

So instead of energy shielding, advanced missiles and nanites we shall have...

Energy shielding, advanced missiles and.. antimatter power generation?

That doesn't actually work.

For the very simple reason that you need to create antimatter, something which requires more energy than you can ever hope to get out of the reactor.

I'd vote for Drone specialization.

Yep, drones is a good substitute to nanites ( but I suspect that 99% of the fleet will be drones... )

Mining is important.

why don't we grab something more general like lightweight hull design or spinal mounted weaponry that we can use on a larger majority of ship sizes?

hell even grabbing something like "support craft" would probably get us both drones and fighters as well as maybe the corvette sized ships.

I'm torn between mining and drones.

why are you guys pushing for drone specialization anyway?
they aren't really going to have any comparable combat effectiveness and spamming them would be counterproductive as a few fighters or a corvette would easily outperform them due to the the fact they can house more advanced subsystems.
unless we are planning on becoming a purely economical faction i dont see any possible benefit on specializing in this field.
can we please choose something with a bit more long term usefulness like corvettes, mining tech or cloaking devices?

Drones are very nice actually.  Recon drones, scout drones, Point defense drones, Mining drones

Oh, and do note that drone means automated robotical unit. There's no size limit implied.

Furtherly, increasing the size means that you make a bigger target. A single massdriver round can obliterate a corvette, and a laser can snipe them of from much, much farther. Adding to that, the lifesupport systems required in manned craft take up large amounts of space, while the pressurization weakens the hull materials.

((DogFighters in space are silly, btw. As is a cloacking device.))

how is a cloaking device in space silly?

if you can get your entire fleet into orbit around your intended target without betraying any signs that your fleet has even left your home system then you have a pretty fucking massive tactical advantage.

oh and there is a size limit on drones, its 100m3
i have no problem against unmanned craft if thats what you were pushing for but you may want to actually state that instead of drone.

Because it doesn't work. It's entirely impossible.

There's no such thing as stealth in space.

In order for a stealth system to work, you'd need to drop your temperature to background temperature, apply gravitational shenanigans to bend light around you and hide your gravitational footprint,  and invent a reactionless drive.

Adding to that the fact that you can't see anything, do anything or even communicate while the stealth system is online. And you need to keep it online for a long time, while the temperature in the craft keeps building up. Meaning you'd end toasted pretty fast, and in no combat position when you exit stealth.

Oh, and I didn't look at the size designations. Hadn't noticed those.

before you instantly can the idea you gotta think for a sec,

first, with sufficiently advanced technology we can internally store the heat within shielded chambers and use that same gravitational shenanigans that bend light around our ship and hide our gravitational footprint to conceal the thermal signature.

second, a cloaking device based solely around invisibility would be short range only and if we have access to FTL travel we can outrun the long range imprint anyway.

third, cloaking doesn't just mean invisible it can also mean unnoticeable, if we create a device that simply makes us appear boring and/or harmless then we can get all the way to almost short range without anyone giving us a second thought.

and lastly, its a game. let the gm state whats impossible in his setting as he may wish to take certain liberties for the sake of game play, after all he was going to allow semi Hollywood-esque nanites to keep us happy.
