One of the 7 bled to death seconds before the fort crumbled, so I think there're 5 left.

You know, unless I was wrong.

Or if I'm lying.

Awesome :)

OK, I saved and made a back up to see if I can find out what is causing the horrendous lag.

/slayrace everything in the fort makes no difference.

Checking for flows reveals a lot of water flows.

On closer inspection, the flooded caves are not all 7/7 water. Quite a few 6 and the occasional 5. I think all that water sloshing around the cave system is what is causing the lag.

I don't think I will be able to find the remaining 5 forgotten beasts or gather up the candy armour at 1 frame per 30 seconds as it is. Unless there is a clever way to delete all the water or stop it flowing of course?

Alternative if you are keen on reclaiming is using DFHack to kill the FBs and various other "guests" although it is a bit cheesy...

Could you use DFHack to freeze the water? Then you could turn off temperature and it would be solid ice and cause no flow issues, and when I turn the temperature back on to resettle the site for it'll go back to water.

Right?

You can use DF hack liquids comand to make more water to fill the flows to 7.

I tried a little bit of messing around with the DFHack liquids menu, but I am pretty far from expert on DFHack as I only downloaded it yesterday.

I figured out how to seal the cavern lakes off from map edges by forming obsidian walls. I wondered if water leaving or entering the map was causing the problem because normally you would expect the lakes to be uniform 7/7 wouldn't you? That didn't affect the calculations per tick or whatever is driving the insane lag.

Couldn't get new water to add to existing water though, only create it on dry tiles. There's probably a trick to it that I don't understand.

I didn't see any way to convert the water to ice. Would that be something possible on the fly via raws etc? Like changing the temperature of the zone to freezing, like rivers freezing at night in adventure mode?

Any tips? Or failing that, I could upload my existing save (with my adventurer Kogan inside the fort having killed first FB, which incidentally when butchered created a whopping 448 meat...) so that someone with a bit more modding experience could take a look? As I said in my first post I haven't been playing long and until now had stuck to Vanilla with no mods etc.

Hm. Actually, I think the easiest way to do it would be to change the freezing point of water in the raws.

Set it to anything higher than the neutral temperature of the map, pop in, let it freeze, then quit out, fix the melting point of water, turn temperature off (to keep it frozen during your adventure) and then I can turn temp back on and deal with the 'entire cavern lake melting at once' lag.

It seems you cannot modify water. Couldn't find it in the RAWs and found this tidbit from the wiki discussion page on modding from the last version of DF:

Modding Liquids

Does anyone know if you can mod water? all i want to do is drop the freezing temp a bit to stop ice from forming, but i can't find it anywhere in the raws. Thanks. --rogue ork 16:47, 20 february 2011
Water is hardcoded, so you can't mod it. --SpitefulFox 06:02, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks --rogue ork 00:30, 25 february 2011 (UTC)

My next thought was to mod the ambient temperature of the cavern to (for example) 9990 Urists, but I can't find it in the RAWS either.

Kesperan cancels remaking the world - frustrated.

Edit - so, I replaced all the 5 and 6 tiles of water with obsidian blocks, assuming that would stop sloshing. No difference on the lag. I am all out of ideas.

Ok, so, I put up a post in the General Discussion forum here.

Anyone who is interested in trying to figure out what's causing this issue, head over there and stop. Collaborate and listen.

Good stuff. I was quite enjoying this, hope we can find a solution! I've tried everything I can think of but I am very new to all of this!

Edit:

OK, so there doesn't seem to be a solution forthcoming, so I braved the FPS to kill the second Forgotten Beast. I can't find the others, so I killed them off in DFHack.

Made it out to the same fort as Tekkud Warmwheeled had retired in. He seemed pleased to see me and regaled me with tales of goblins he had killed. He seemed keen to join me until he noticed I was coated in Forgotten Beast extract and wearing *human skin socks* whereupon he decided to back away slowly from the adamantine-clad elite wrestler vampire necromancer...

I have saved the file just after I have retired at the fort. Kogan and Tekkud are both there, and I have put some food and weapons/armour in a chest in the fort for any other adventurers that might want to have a wander in this world.

Hope you decide to reclaim :)

Thanks a ton!

It sucks that this didn't quite work out, but it's awesome that you did this :) I will definitely go in with Bronzebanners 3 and we'll see how that goes :)

Do I need any mods to play or does Vanilla DF work?

I only use a graphics tileset, no mods.

However, kesperan accomplished the objective already, and Bronzebanners III has been founded. I'ma lock this thread, and toss a link at the end that goes over to the new thread.

And I'm going to clean up all the items on the map and see if the next adventurer has a better time.

Ok, this is done since kesperan managed to at least eliminate the beasts. Bronzebanners III is officially open for business; check out the first seven over here.
