I've been wishing to do "the full batman" if I'm at university with access to the requisite resources available in cities, but the degree to which i waste my time now bothers me. Obviously, there's coding, which i could pick up the basics of despite it being a changing field. Hopefully, there's also languages. Ruling out the more overtly physical skills, would it be a reasonable option to learn say Electronics, Mechanics, and others? Improving my founding in science would also be excellent, though not going on to it for university limits my options. Your thoughts and experiences are welcomed.

To name but a few:
-Programming computers
-Gem cutting and setting
-making jewellery
- Agriculture(more specifically horticulture via hydroponics if you live in the city)
- animal husbandry( a well run rabbit farm can make a serious amount of money and not particularly strenuous and is relatively cheap)
- Natural medicine
- cookery
- sewing

Its the internet, there are literally millions of hobbies, so start with these and see if you like them

Could you narrow it down to prime skills, so to speak? Likely to come up in day to day life?

Uh... well, that depends on what your day to day life is like.

But for me, sewing, cooking, math up through calculus, and French/German I use pretty much constantly.

And what your day to day life is like depends at least partly on what you know.  When all you have is a hammer, all your problems look like nails.

Electronics doesn't look all that useful in a day to day life way, at least from the outside.  When you need to use a pay phone and discover some vandal snapped the receiver in half, being able to rig a fix in under a minute with a pair of headphones is pretty handy.  When someone throws out a $600 laptop because the display dissolves into static any time the thing is jarred, and you can point out the fatigued screen cable, replace it for $20 and keep the fully functional laptop, that's a huge discount over buying new hardware.

In general, knowing how things work is very valuable knowledge.

Listen up: making a thing a ‼thing‼ doesn't make it more awesome or extreme.  It simply indicates the thing is on fire.  Get it right or look like a silly poser.

It's useful to keep a ‼torch‼ handy.

Things that are quick to learn, and likely to require some use in daily life.

1. Set up a wireless network
2. Clean a keyboard or mouse
3. Use a screwdriver (Seriously - there's more to it than righty tighty, lefty loosy. Know the difference between a torx and phillips? A 0 phillips and 2 phillips? Can you unscrew something that you aren't looking straight at?)
4. Create a basic webpage/blog
5. Use macro mode on a digital camera
6. Check and add windshield washer fluid to a car
7. Memorize recipes for a few cocktails, and actually make them (provided of legal drinking age, of course)

Learn how to jumpstart a car. That comes up so, so much IRL, and you can just read a tutorial on how to do it, basically.

Ooh, I forgot.  Basic maintenance skills for just about everything you own, and an arts/craft thing (that will save you one hell of a lot of money on gifts).

How to kick down a door: 11 Steps (with pictures). Practice on your neighbor's door.

No? I'd suggest learning a language then.

There was a topic about stuff you could learn on the forums. It's old, but there are perhaps some links that still work.
