What's the most annoying combat situation you've been in?
« on: April 23, 2013, 09:53:29 am »

On one of my earliest forts - on my last computer, unfortunately I didn't save the Dwarf Fortress folder - a goblin siege showed up while a human diplomat was leaving.

The human diplomat was a fire-breathing demon.

The goblins were riding on cave dragons.

I had recently clear-cut my forest and had left wood scattered all over the ground...

Yeah, my dwarves couldn't go outside for over a year.

All ravens, all day, every day, ravens.

The commas are indicative, of more, you guessed it, ravens, ravens, ravens and ravens.

In one fort, seasonally, getting raided by thieving keas. I hired my crossbow teams to settle the situation with kea bone bolts. Send them a message. Thanks to them, I had to make an artificial obsidian box to stash glitchy game-breaking items (necessary because those gorrammed keas keep taking them, and thereby crashing the game).

In my megaproject, as of recent, I have a minotaur that visits, and I am having trouble trying to kill it an minimize casualties; besides that, unlucky migrants seem to get in scuffles with the local monitor lizards and the occasional jaguar.

EDIT:
Now we have a vile force of darkness turning into a fine red mist and tenderized meat. By 3 weapon traps and thanks to them not being ranged units, I can lock them out, clean the traps, and then wait for the next group to get thoroughly blended. In the meantime, my marksdwarves can get some training in.

I've had a fortress besieged by undead for 90% of it's existence. The four or so survivors were trapped deep underground with no hope of escape. Most migrants died, and those who made it inside were slowly picked off by ghosts. It was... one of the most depressingly hopeless situation I'd ever been in.

Harpies. Hell, everything flying is terrible job-interrupter. Especially harpies. Sometimes I should try to get them go extinct.

Companions kill stealing. I got my first ever quest to kill a minotaur the other day, and I was pretty pumped for a big difficult battle (the world I genned hadn't proven especially difficult so far). I was prepared for all my companions to die, and crippling injury if not outright death for myself.

Wandering the labyrinth, my companions rush down a side tunnel and a minotaur head flies at me from out of sight. In the handful of turns it took me to go over there, my companions had killed the minotaur and its two children with nary a scratch on them. >:(

I made a massive trap hallway armed with green glass cages and kept them all locked up, then eventually graduated to one filled with weapon traps of green glass discs to eliminate the remainder. I also resorted to cheating with DFhack, using autodump to get the corpses of any that died directly onto my refuse stockpile, where they couldn't reanimate. Otherwise, the necromancers would have just kept raising them, and undead raised on your map are a massive pain in the ass because they never leave and don't all bumrush the first entrance you give them.

There was a husk.
Thread "The Running Dead", anyone?

Husk from that thread is still ali... still hasn't been re-killed. Even after having every bone of his body broken, after having all his muscles ripped of by dogs, he continues to run in circles around my entrance...
(My 4 war dogs... RIP ;_;)
