2nd Felsite, Late Spring 203

Migrants have arrived- only Luna knows why. Most of them are used to the cushy lifestyle they enjoyed back home- might as well have cutie marks for guzzling resources. A few are salvageable, though. Notably, we got a good armorsmith, a mechanic almost on par with Wilde Card, and a mean-looking mare with a cutie mark of a bloodstained war hammer. I gave that last one- Poetry Drinkplaits- her own squad, complete with mentor. I've got a good feeling about her.

The population of Bastionrise is now one hundred and four, counting Ice Blade, who has got to be around here somewhere. We have more than two hundred and fifty rations of drink on hand, as well as nearly a hundred meal rations (each of which can last a pony a month, the repulsive things), but given the sudden increase in population I'll likely have to step up production orders again.

The defenses are... not complete, exactly, but at an acceptable level of security.

19th Felsite

A Wastelander caravan showed up. I do hope they'll be more reasonable than last time.

In other news, something the ponies are calling a "cave floater" appeared underground, chased around one of our scavengers, and was promptly slain by Considerate Paperutter. She didn't take a scratch, but now she doesn't look very well. I've ordered her to take the week off.

20th Felsite

Paperutter is bleeding all over the hospital bed. It's really putting me off my oats.

21st Felsite

Something is definitely wrong now. Ponies do not normally have that much blood to lose; I would know. I'm sending the medical team t Scratch that, she just threw up the same sap that came out of the floater's corpse when it died. The mining crew is moving to wall off the infirmary right now- I know a catastrophe when I see one. We're also going to seal off the original contaminant; these caverns are bad news. There are sill other ponies in the infirmary. They might be uninfected, but I can't take that chance-not with a hundred lives at stake.

Paperutter, I'm sorry.

Quote from: Clarity Stylebean's Diary

14th Malachite, Mid-Summer 203

The forsaken few knocked on the barricade for weeks. They told us, in voices barely audible through the stone, how they were subsisting on a single barrel of celery that was left behind in the rush to evacuate the hospital. They told us how Paperutter's condition grew unimaginably worse, and then- unthinkably- better. Her eyelids had long ago torn from the swelling of her eyes, her bones broke of their own accord and stuck through the flesh, her teeth shattered and blisters grew in their place, and every inch of skin on her body was shredded by the effort of breathing; yet still she breathed. Her blood ran from her body like the rats from a sinking ship until the bed was a single clot of dried viscera, but nopony else in confinement grew ill. That convinced me that the quarantine was unnecessary.

When the quarantine wall was torn down, Paperutter was the first of the imprisoned to walk out the hallway. Perhaps "walk" is the wrong word- she dragged herself, and shambled. Her limbs are irreparably shattered, she has scar tissue in place of skin, and her eyes stare lidlessly. And yet she is happy- she wept tears of joy after rejoining her family, and when I talked to her, she seemed more cheerful than almost any other pony in the stable.

She requested to be allowed to remain on military duty, and I consented. Though she may never kill another Bloodwing, she still has many lessons to teach the recruits... with Laughter foremost among them.

In other news, the defenses are complete. I've finished both entrances- one of them a winding passage for caravans with a drawbridge to keep out invaders, and the other a straight hallway with traps and three fortified turrets. Nopony living could walk down that corridor and not take home a bullet-hole, but I figure raiders are just about stupid enough to try.

Well well well. This place looks mighty defendable. Also, do you happen to have screen caps? If not, the Windows Snipping tool can be used to take screen caps easily. Just be sure to upload them to here when you're done.

Iceblaster: I've been taking screencaps, but my computer seems to have taken a dislike to image uploaders. When I get it working right, I'll insert them into the proper posts.

17th Limestone, Early Autumn 203

A lot of things have happened. First, I got a stupid but kind-of-badass nickname after putting down a feral ghoul single-handedly. Second, the scavengers found an awesome weapon in a box labelled "Little Macintosh". The name rings a bell with me, but I couldn't quite say why. I've assigned the handgun to the first, and thus far only, member of our ranged squad. Thirdly, a slaver caravan showed up. I dealt with them in the customary manner, by which I mean roughed them up and went through their pockets for spare change.

And last but not least, this morning, a massive hellbird showed up on our doorstep. I'm not talking about a phoenix- I've seen phoenixes, and this thing is at least thirty times as big. Where it flies, the ground beneath it catches fire. One of the migrants called it "Mintlion", and said that it destroyed his previous stable. All I know is, chump's going down.

3rd Sandstone, Mid-Autumn 203

I'd love to say that I killed the hellbird Mintlion myself, but the truth is that it died to a lone spritebot that was stationed on the roof. This might almost be funny if it hadn't torched half the mountain first. Fortunately, I don't think anypony died- we found one charred skeleton, but the dagger it was clutching looks like raider gear, so no big loss. We briefly ran out of drinks, but that cleared up when I told the brewers to make some more- I swear that every time I take my eyes off of those bastards, they stop working.

It's been just about a year since I was appointed to this post. During that time, some bad things have happened- like the accident with Paperutter, for instance. And some good things have happened- I've grown nothing but closer to my friends, and have kindled a tiny spark of civilization in the wastelands. Did I do a good job? I don't know. There are certainly those who would have done better in my place. But at least this wasn't a repeat of the Solitary Gladness.

Back in the day, Solitary Gladness was the codename for an effort to establish a self-sustained outpost in slaver territory. I was that outpost's first militia commander and overmare. I was also its last militia commander and overmare, since we underestimated the enemy's intel and were overrun in a matter of weeks. I don't know of anypony else who escaped.

But enough reminiscing. I've got work to do.

I Return!
Hey there, everypony! I'm back from my vacation thing, IRL had me for a bit, but I bit off it's nipples, and while it was unconscious from the pain, I offed it with my trusty super sledge.

Edit- How is the meat thing going? Still none, or eating it? Just wondering.

I haven't butchered anything, and currently our meat stocks are at zero, but there may have been some on the slaver caravan I plundered traded with.

Sorry for my absence, everyone- just got out of surgery yesterday morning, and while playing FoE:DF is possible while spun out on prescription painkillers, it is not a good idea.

Zioko: do you want to take the fortress over from me now, or let me finish up my last six months? Either way is fine by me.

Oh, I'm fine. Just a planned operation to remove a titanium bar. Ribs are gonna be sore for a little bit, but other than that, I'm good.

3rd Timber, Late Autumn 203

The masons are working on building a second story to the fortifications. Since Bastionrise is built into a hill, it was always a risk that enemies could simply walk from the top of the hill onto the roof of the Stable. Once this wall is complete, that method of attack will become impossible.

When designing our defenses, I have always sought to think like somepony trying to get in. Our Stable is approaching the point where I would rather attack a Steel Ranger base. We've even found some Plasteel and a few Talismans in the old crates- those were pricey even before the Last Day. Rather than make a Kinetic Sledgehammer for our hammer squad, I'd rather save them up for a larger project. Speaking of which, we are so close to making a RobronCo Forge! Just a few more terminal parts! We already have blueprints for several robot designs, so I'm positively gleeful at the possibility of making them ourselves instead of relying of the homeland's generosity.

More migrants, diary! It's getting to the point where I don't know everypony's names anymore. But, you know, I've started to regard this place as home- with its hideously maimed militia commanders, its regularly scheduled ghoul attacks, and its bloodstained entranceways, it has really captured my heart.

The doctors refuse to operate on Paperutter, because apparently she shouldn't even still be alive. Something about "total inoperable necrosis", "fulgurating gangrenic blood poisoning", and "cessation of function in all major organs"? Something like that; I don't speak medicalese. That might be just as well, anyhow; no sense putting her through more pain if she doesn't even mind her condition. Though we have had multiple ponies mistake her for a feral ghoul...

Lastly, I'm having the weavers make clothes out of the silky stuff we keep finding in the caverns. Honestly, I'm wary of anything that comes out of that place, but the silk seems harmless enough. Besides, everypony is sick of wearing the same Luna-damned jumpsuits for years on end, even if they do self-clean.

9th Timber, Late Autumn 203

Our Stable has reached the point where many of the ponies have substantial free time. That's fine and all, but it won't keep us alive, so I've set Paperutter up a squad and room where she can teach civilians the basics of self-defense. I have no illusions about their chances of taking on armed slavers, but they should at least be competent at using their own hooves in combat. Paperutter can only teach so many students at a time, so I'm cycling civilians out of the class as they reach an acceptable level of combat proficiency. Priority is being given to training ponies with dangerous occupations (fisherponies, scavengers, hunters) and ponies with nothing else to do at the moment (soapmakers, herbalists, animal caretakers).

And yes, I'm talking about that Paperutter. If there's anypony who can teach civvies not to be afraid of their own blood, it's her.

12th Timber

The home Stable's caravan arrived. Unfortunately, their wagons departed early because the Trade Depot was still in shambles from our last "business deal". Hopefully the merchants won't be intimidated by the bloody floors.
