Ancient Games Thread: Let Us Revel In Nostalgia
« on: April 23, 2013, 06:38:47 am »

So I decided to make a thread for all the good old gaming of ancient times.
Made this to prevent clutter in another thread.

I myself never had any Amiga/Comedore games, my oldest memories of gaming is from ancient MS DOS and the good old Nintendo. However I miss the age of the SNES. Good times..

And so the adventure begins...
So... Sword Master (NES), greatest fighting game ever made, or just greatest game ever made?

Crystal Caves on DOS. Dropped so many hours of time in to that game as a kid.

Edit:
On the SNES. One of my most vivid memories of my childhood was hooking up my brand new SNES on christmas day, and marveling at how amazing the graphics were compared to the NES. It was mindblowing, you could barely even SEE the pixels!

I never owned a NES of SNES, as such most of my early gaming was from DOS or Windows 3.1.

Hmm, for SNES it was possibly "Duck Hunt" with the lightgun, or maybe... "Guerrillas" I think it was called? You played as a rebel soldier against enemy forces in a top down wave shooter, like Tyrian.

For DOS... I'll give a point for Crystal Caves, also Captain Comic, Monster Bash and Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure. Ah, when Apogee was a major platformer producer.

Crystalis. At the time, it was the pinnacle of action-adventure-rpgs to me. I remember my brother was royally pissed when I beat the game while he was at school

I think the first multiplayer games I ever played were BBS door games like Legend of the Red Dragon, Exitilus and Trade Wars. I remember how novel it used to be to chat over a BBS to random people.

LotRD has been remade into a browser game if people are curious about that golden slice of gaming history that nobody really talks about anymore.

(Heroes) of Might and Magic? (except for V+VI and XI+X, respectively, which are all admittedly crap)

Not truly ancient. (although Might & Magic surfaced in...1986?)

While I had never played it myself, Icewind Dale 1 & 2. Along with KOTR I and NWN 1 and 2 (though the last one really isn't ancient at all.) I watched my dad playing all of those on the computer and read the strategy guides in my free time.

Battle for Atlantis, an old freeware DOS game made by Soleau Software, released in 1990. This is why I started playing strategy games.

Chip's Challenge, a 1991 puzzle game. Not the first I ever played but probably the best.

Mice Maze, another Soleau game, this one an action-adventure.

I have fond memories of sitting in front of our beige box with my tiny little hands playing games. Of course I also remember playing Age of Empires on a computer so terrible that it got roughly 3 frames per second. :x

Hm, I really should go through the first one, at least once in my lifetime.
