Finding an abandeon fortress.
« on: April 22, 2013, 06:50:45 pm »

I had a really good fort going, but the harsh weather started killing off my dorfs through various means. I want to re settle, I know the area it's in but not the exact spot. Is there a quick way to find the old fort?

I believe the command is 'R' on the site selection menu. If it's not that then you should be able to look at the bottom of the screen and see the option for 'reclaim' there somewhere.

Beware that in the current version reclaiming is impossible extremely buggy. I personally have never actually succeeded on reclaim, because the game crashes instantly upon embarking. I believe it may have something to do with the presence of artifacts, but that's just speculation, as I know that artifacts are also inherently buggy in general, and even more so when reclaim is brought into question.

In short, you're better off learning how to use DFhack, and using EmbarkAnywhere utility to start a fresh embark on the site of the old fort. Slightly less glitchy, with the side effect of actually working.

I have never had a problem reclaiming. It always loads for me so far. One side effect of reclaiming is that all of the items and corpses are randomly spread around the map. I do agree that DF Hack can be very useful though.

I've reclaimed into a fortress with Forgotten Beasts that weren't there when I abandoned. Didn't last long, that.

Usually this happens when the FB's are hidden in the caverns, so even though you couldn't see them they were already on the map. The reclaim lets them phase up to the surface and start wrecking havoc.
