Problem with pig iron *SOLVED*
« on: April 22, 2013, 12:46:38 pm »

My dorfs refuse to smelt pig iron bars because there is no refined coal while trying to do this at magma smelter! I tried to manage this, and forbid/unforbit flux and iron bars.

Edit: Thanks for fast response

That's correct behavior.  Smelting pig iron bars always requires at least one refined coal for the reaction.  In a conventional smelter, two refined coal would be required.

Note that this is similar to the real world. In the real world forging pig iron or steel requires the addition of carbon to the metal, a thing that DF simulates by including an extra bar of fuel in the reactants. This is also why if you make pig iron or steel at a normal forge it will take two bars of fuel, one to power the reaction and one for the reaction itself.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

And to make Steel, it requires the flux then.
To arrange the carbon particles in the iron to make it bond stronger.
I watched history channel, I got this stuff down. Also, good luck with your fortress! I usually just skip to candy armor, due to it's light weight and extreme durability. Oh, and usually candy axes as well. I once had a group of 10 soldiers wearing civie clothes and only a candy axe wipe out 3 ambushes at once. Then a siege shortly after that. NO injuries. (I used a danger room...) Then I accidentally opened up clowns.
That didn't go well at all.

The only difference between a human student and a dwarf is that dwarfs have the ability to create and destroy matter.
So will the dwarf with the broken spine recover and use a crutch?
