baldur's gate 1 and 2 were quite good single/multplayer games. never got tired of dizzit.

I think I'll suggest something that almost no one has played:

King's Field The Ancient City

It is by far the most atmospheric dungeon crawler I've ever played, you really feel the danger all the time and the whole thing is on the border of spooky/mystical realm of gold and glory.  It is a bit hard to find though, but can be cheap if you do find it.  I only paid $4 and its in my top 5 PS2 games.

Yakuza 2 (didnt played 1, it was preatty cool tough)
GodHand (a little hardcore and its a strange one but this is bay12)

I don't reall have any reccomendations that haven't already been mentioned. I'll have to look through my(sizable) library of PS2 games. Offhand I would say the Soul Calibur(I have SCII) games are a good choice, and Wild Arms 3 is pretty good too.

Abe's Oddeysee and Exodus: Fantastic puzzle-platformers with dark humour, excellent CGI ( for the time) and hair pulling puzzles. Must buy. Technically from the PSX but hey, it's awesome.
Metal Slug Anthology: Iwould call it side scrolling bullet hell, but not that many bullets. Still, 7 games, good coop, great bosses, great artwork.
Worms 3D: Yeah, 3D doesn't favour worms the best but this is excellent and very worthy of your time.

Where do I even start...

-ALL THE PERSONA GAMES. ALL OF IT.
-Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne
-Okami
-Shadow of the Colossus
-God of War (it can get pretty boring though)
-Devil May Cry (especially 3. Avoid 2)
-Suikoden 3 & 5 (Avoid 4 unless you are invested in the plot, not that it matters much)
-FFX (best Final Fantasy for the PS2. FFXII is fine, but it plays differently. Ivalice is a plus, though)
-Armored Core: Ninebreaker (Pretty fine game, but only if you dig robots)
-Nippon Ichi titles (better on portable though. Avoid if you have portable versions)
-MGS 3 (Subsistence)
-Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven

Ratchet & Clank is good, but I haven't played those games on the PS2. I'm missing out.

+1 for King's Field: Ancient City. The game handles a little clunky but it is full of stuff and it's well-archietechted world. If you enjoyed Dark/Demon Souls, you'll enjoy King's Field a lot.

Also all of the Tenchu games are good. The older ones haven't aged very well though.

Gladius is something that I don't think alot of peple know about/had, but I thought it was a nice turn-based strategy (like Final Fantasy Tactics) set in not!Ancient Rome. You go around the world and fight through several gladiatorial arenas, but with plenty of other things to break the monotony.

Honestly I've seen games that didn't really age well and have had their modern scores drop like a rock (Heck the first Spyro aged BADLY!)

But Gladius is a mid 7 and even today it is a mid 7.

Also are the other Shin Megami Tensei games just not worth picking up?

Well all the games use the same core system with slight variations. I think Nocturne is one of the best in terms of production values and overall entertainment.

Like, the old SMT on NES is fairly primitive.

Why? It has one of the best battle systems in the Final Fantasy series. The minigames are odd, but it is by far a funner game than X.
