Ironically my highest recommended titles are all PS1 titles

Which is perfectly legitimate to play on a PS2.
*glares at PS3*
There were ps3s that could run ps2 games until Sony decided overreaction is the best reaction to people actually using everything the console came with..

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

Burnout 3: Take down. Best racing game on the platform. It is actually fun rather than car porn.
It helps that you just crash your enemies while not being to focussed on the crashing aspect.

Only racing game I really liked.

Hehe, nice, a list of awesome PS2 games I still need to play through. :D

On my side, I recommend Nippon Ichi's games (Disgaea, Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom), Odin Sphere (one of the most beautiful game I've seen in my life, if not the most; VanillaWare FTW) and, a shoot'em up I like a lot, R-Type Final.

On the PS2 CoDs, I'd say Big Red One is my favorite. It followed the big Red One (surprise!) through North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany, and you really do get a feel for the characters. Operation: Husky was my favorite. They do kinda need to make another WW2 game in my opinion. Tech's come pretty far since World at War, and a solid storyline that doesn't involve people with slightly darker skin or russian accents as the bad guys.

I'll support a few other suggestions in this thread, and make some more.

God Hand
is an absolutely zany and fun third person brawler that you won't regret picking up.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King is probably my all-time favorite RPG, and it's probably nostalgia talking, but everything about it is just perfect. I bought it three times. If I still had a PS2, I'd be playing it to this day.
The Sly Cooper series as a whole is great. Not your standard stealth games, and the missions and characters will keep you hooked.
Call of Duty 3 is something I replayed tons of times, and it's a pretty goddamn good shooter for it's time. Same with the Medal of Honor series, like Rising Sun. Double the fun if you have another person to play through the story with.
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 is a must-have if you're a fan of DBZ or just fighting games in general. Budokai 3 is great to pick up as well, unless you don't mind the fact they changed all the music for the HD Xbox 360 release.
Gladius is something that I don't think alot of peple know about/had, but I thought it was a nice turn-based strategy (like Final Fantasy Tactics) set in not!Ancient Rome. You go around the world and fight through several gladiatorial arenas, but with plenty of other things to break the monotony.
Final Fantasy X is my favorite 'main' Final Fantasy, and always will be.
Robot Alchemic Drive if you want a 'so bad it's good' dub and giant robots duking it out. And you get to control one from the ground!
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and San Andreas are classics and nothing like GTA4. May or may not be a good thing for you.

Also: Vagrant Story. It's a PSX game, but it's one of the other games I fire up my PS2 for.

This is a fantastic thread, because I now have Gladius to hunt down.

I'll have alot of things to try out myself next time I get access to a PS2.

I'll throw in another recommendation for Jak and Daxter too, although I've only played the first one. Really wanted to play the others, but it never happened.

Final Fantasy X is my favorite 'main' Final Fantasy, and always will be.

Garbage. Stick to the PS1 and prior, avoiding VIII.

Most anything from xseed, Atlus, and NIS are good.

If you have anyone to play co-op with, Tales of the Abyss is a must-have RPG.

Final Fantasy X is my favorite 'main' Final Fantasy, and always will be.

Garbage. Stick to the PS1 and prior, avoiding VIII.

Most anything from xseed, Atlus, and NIS are good.

Garbage. Stick to the SNES and prior, avoiding Mystic Quest. :P

Persona 3 FES, the best Persona iteration in the whole series.

If you got a PS2 then get Persona 4. No reason not to.
