What Playstation 2 Games Should I Buy?
« on: April 21, 2013, 10:28:32 pm »

So it turns out, while searching around my basement, I found my old PS2, and it still works! However, I don't have that many games to play. What games do you think I should buy, or at least try out?

Colosseum: Road to Freedom is a fighting game that takes place in the gladiatorial arena. It's somewhat dated but is, in my opinion, still a great game. Each limb, your torso, and your head have independent health and can be armored as well. There's a neat (optional) storyline
GTA: San Andreas is a must-have in my opinion. At least if that's your kind of game.
Resident Evil 4 had a little bit extra on the PS2 (most notably the Ada missions).
Ace Combat 4 and 5 if you're into arcade-y flight combat.
Alien vs Predator: Extinction is another favorite of mine. An RTS where you can control Predators, Humans, or Aliens (Alien is te only real choice).
Sniper Elite is still one of my top five games of all time.
Dragon Quest VIII is a very fun RPG, with the big bonus of Akira Toriyama working on the art stuff.

That's what I can remember of my library. I'll look later and see what else I can suggest.

How about Shadow of the Colossus? If climbing on 10-story creatures to stab their weakpoints in a massive and gorgeous world doesn't sound fun, then I don't know what would.

Oh man how could I forget that!?

There's also Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater, which I personally think is the best of the series. And if you aren't familiar with the series, it's a prequel! So you can play it and not get some of the references, but you won't be lost.

Okami. Great game, and the PS2 version (as opposed to the wii version) has the original credits animation thing and doesn't make a minor sidequest result pointless due to the credits thing, and also has a minigame in the loading screen.

Also games I remember playing and thought we good:
Ratchet & Clank Going Commando, and Up Your Arsenal: Pretty fun 3rd person adventure/shooter games. I didn't play the original or Deadlocked, though they're probably similar.
God Hand: Really damn hard 3rd person brawler. But so awesome when things are going your way, and has the best credits ever.
Destroy All Humans! 2 (Theres several, but I only got to play one before my ps2 broke :/) Silly open-world game about being an alien invader. Fun and sometimes funny.
Star Wars Battlefront 2: Not the best of game, not the worst. Was nice to play with a friend, however.

Metal Gear Solid 3. By far the best game I have in my PS2 collection, possibly the best game on the entire console. Get Subsistence if you can.

Ace Combat 4, Ace Combat 5, Ace Combat 0.

I would go with the Subsistence version (the movable camera makes a lot of difference), but yes, that's the top PS2 game on my list as well.  Ranks right up there with Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as one of the greatest games ever made, IMO.

Burnout 3: Take down. Best racing game on the platform. It is actually fun rather than car porn.

Ironically my highest recommended titles are all PS1 titles :P That said:

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. An amazing RPG, both in style and in substance. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Castlevania: Curse of Darkness was pretty decent. It's no Symphony of the Night but is perhaps the best console Castlevania since. (Haven't played Lord of Shadows, but as I understand it the series takes a pretty dramatic turn after the PS2.)

This. SMT Nocturne is probably the best JRPG I ever played. Its excellent in every way, gameplay, art and story, with the usual SMT deal of combining and transforming demons which is done in the most brilliant way in the series so far.

I fully support Sly Cooper and Ratchet & Clank. They were some of the best games I played in my childhood, and if you have 2 controllers and a friend, you can have endless fun with 2-player-same-team matches in Ratchet & Clank 3's multiplayer mode. Ratchet & Clank: Gladiator is also very much recommended if you have said second controller and friend. Sly Cooper is just plain fucking awesome, it's hard to express in words how fucking awesome it is, and if I tried I would have to write a 500-page-thick book with awesome every five words. I also support Burnout, because it's really fucking awesome and fun. GTA: San Andreas is also by far the best GTA game in ever imho, so that one is a great addition to your arsenal too.

Can't say much about the first 3 CoD's except that I bought them in a sort of game omnibus and that you may be able to find said omnibus.

E: Dog's Life is a fun exploring game and a pretty big world to mess around in. Another game is sonic gems collection, which contains a bunch of nice games including Sonic CD and that Tails game (and Sonic R, if you want to play something hilariously terribad). It also has the two Vectorman games, I heard those are fiendishly hard, so if you want a challenge, they're good.
