So Westeros is now an elective monarchy ran by a Psychic Treeboy Hivemind?

...I'm...not sure what point or message or meaning or theme to extract from that. That the Borg are right, and man must submit to the will of the collective for peace? That mental illness is genetic and if your parents are mentally ill you should give up because you are already damned?

This isn't bitter. This isn't sweet. This is just hollow. GRRM tries to have an underlying theme to his work. It tries to be saying something. What the heck is this even trying to say? And if it is nothing, then why does it even exist?

I'm not doubting GRRM will have similar story beats to his ending, but hopefully if it happens it will actually be done in a way that you can extract some meaning out of. Because in the end, all of Game of Thrones just feels like a decade-long Shaggy Dog Story in the worst sense of the term.

Actually, let's go back to Dany's twist turn because sweet jesus the more I think about it the more it becomes not just poorly written but flat out offensive in execution.

Dany goes mad suddenly and with minimal real warning, and the justification of it ultimately boils down to "well, her dad was mad".

Just...just think about that for a moment. Got a mental illness? Don't you dare breed, because all you'll do is breed more mad people forever and ever! How insulting is that? A gradual slide that keeps them sympathetic and allows the tragedy of the situation would be one thing, but for it to be so sudden and for them to become unsympathetic so suddenly...it's not just a sour taste, it's a massive fuck you to everyone who has ever struggled with any kind of mental health problems in their life.

It's meant to be a gradual slide, the show just executed it poorly. Side effect of the few episodes this season.

Dany lost her best friends, had an existential crisis after finding out Jon is the true Targaryen heir, realised she's surrounded by people who won't support her, especially when she's so close to the thing she's dreamed about her entire life. Add in the fact that she's spent her time since late season 1 just constantly growing as this Messianic figure, which only contributes to her delusions of moral authority.

Regardless of the fact that it wasn't all that well, THAT's the narrative. It wasn't just her inbreeding madness.

Like I said, a gradual slide would have worked. I'm not angry at GRRM for the concept and story beats, but for it to be this rushed and sudden and illogical (Cersei was using the common people as a shield by filling The Red Keep with common people. So I went and also killed all the people she...wasn't using as a shield?) is what turns it from what should have been a tragedy into an insult in my mind. This is all directed at the show's portrayal of it.

Again, what is the show trying to say?

I think it's great. It's like you're watching Cosmos, and towards the end Sagan suddenly reveals himself to be Hitler.

I audibly groaned when Tyrion started spouting a slightly edited version of "First they came..."  As if they needed to be any more heavy handed with the comparison.

The last 5 minutes were fine. I was okay with how it all ended up... although Arya's choice was a little weird and out of nowhere... but hey, if she wants to stand on a ship for a while, nobody's gonna stop her.

But I'm with almost everyone in that to get to that point was rushed, forced, and just generally one of the most awkward journeys I've ever been through with a TV show.

It doesn't make a lot of sense that Sam was just elevated to Grand Maester out of nowhere... but I suppose there's precedent now, even if it's just Cersei being Cersei. There's a small part of me that wanted Sam to sit on the council but not have the title of Grand Maester. #prequelmemes

At this point... I'm kind of glad it's over. I usually feel sadness or regret at the end of a series I enjoyed. A desire for it not to end, or a different ending. None of that here... I suppose it's like watching someone you care about, in terrible pain, finally pass away. I'll miss the show that's been a part of my life for this long, but I'm not going to miss what it has become in its final years. I'm glad I don't have to see it like this anymore.

I also just realised how all of the ostensibly 'good guys' that survived this far all got a pretty darn happy ending except Dany.
* Sam gets to be a Grand Maester
* Jon gets to go to the one place he ever truly felt like he belonged.
* Davos gets to be a Master of Ships, and thus truly rewarded for his skills and knowledge.
* Brienne gets to be Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, and thus truly rewarded for her abilities and not scorned for her gender.
* Tyrion gets to be Hand of the King of Westeros, which was where he was at his peak.
* Arya gets to go off and explore the world, which is something she expressed interest in seasons ago.
* Psychic Treeboy Hivemind gets to be King of Westeros (all hail the overmind).
* Sansa becomes Queen of the North.

It's as close to a fairy tale ending as we could have possibly gotten. And with how it was all so rushed...somehow that makes everything worse.

At this point I only care that Ghost and Drogon lived. Everything else got fucked by D&D.

Really says something if people end up only caring about CGI non-speaking animals over the actual main characters.

He starts the process of growing new weirwood groves throughout his kingdom, spreading his power as he does so. No one within the seven kingdoms is outside his range. He can quell all rebellions by warging into the rebels and either adding them to his Hodor army or just making them kill themselves.

Is Bran the broken not son of Ned Stark? Only thing that irritated me was an independant north, what's the point other than generating tensions a few generations down the line? All in all it was okay and meh - the things you do for closure hu?! The only tragedy is the cash they threw at a mostly black and a mostly firery episode instead of doing a shitload of talking so that all the intentions we're currently substituting could be layed out in more detail. As if advertisement slots in the last season of GOT wouldn't be worth a fortune... Even from a business perspective it seems like very poor decision making. Whatever bye bye show that annoyed me for not being more broadly available effortlessly, I won't miss you.

Ok I resumed it better: too much action/heartstrings, too little content. Did the actors become that expensive? Wtf.

I finished the long night on friday so I'd be ready to watch the finale live, started a few weeks ago and finally caught up.

Then after the long night I was like eh.  Whatever.  Its just like harry potter, i read the first six books and then just didnt read the seventh.  Even disregarding how mad everyone is, i have no desire to watch the last three episodes
