Previously it was fairly well established he was no kin-slayer and a Lannister through and through. He had plenty of reasons to kill a couple of other family members too, but admittedly his father game more reasons than most.

If he'd just walked in there and shot him for being a dick all his life I'd be all for it! Although I will miss Tywin as a character.

I mean, the point of that was more the fact that Tywin was dismissing it. Tyrion's in a really shitty place mentally right now. He killed a woman he used to love and his father acts like he just crushed a bug, not only showing that Tywin's a dick but further driving the point home that he really had no understanding of his children's lives.

I feel like they've shown his loyalty deteriorating over this season as everyone except Jaime betrays him (I hope he feels bad for calling out Varys, though). That's why he and Oberyn bonded over their dislike of all the other Lannisters before the fight.

I agree that the motivation was decent enough in the show, but was more so in the books. Finding out that the woman you loved had not been lying about that and was whored out by your father to his soldiers followed by the realisation that he is a massive hypocrite on top of everything else seemed more convincing to me at least.
