I hadn't even realized half of those. Now I feel very, very blind - how could I miss Osha being Tonks? Orell being Ragetti the pirate from PotC? The Hound being that guy from Hot Fuzz is pretty hilarious, though. Also, there's an awful lot of Harry Potter actors in this series, suspicious.

There is a lot of overlap between an all-Brit cast and an all-Brit cast

I didn't think the show was that British, so I checked all the main characters' actors.

American actors:
Peter Dinklage (Tyrion)
Jason Momoa (Drogo)

British Actors (English unless specified):
Lena Headey (Cersei)
Emilia Clarke (Dany)
Kit Harington (Jon Snow)
Iain Glen (Scottish, Jorah)
Aiden Gillen (Irish, Littlefinger)
Charles Dance (Tywin)
Liam Cunningham (Irish, Davos)
Stephen Dillane (Stannis)
Natalie Dormer (Margaery)
Isaac Hempstead-Wright (Bran)
Sophie Turner (Sansa)
Maisie Williams (Arya)
Alfie Allen (Theon)
Jack Gleeson (Irish, Joffrey)
John Bradley-West (Samwell)
Joe Dempsie (Gendry)
Rose Leslie (Scottish, Ygritte)
Rory McCann (Scottish, the Hound)
Conleth Hill (Northern Irish, Varys)
Jerme Flynn (Bronn)
Richard Madden (Scottish, Robb)
Michelle Fairley (Northern Irish, Catelyn)
James Cosmo (Scottish, Jeor Mormont)
Sean Bean (Ned)
Mark Addy (King Robert)
Harry Lloyd (Viserys)

Non-Brit European Actors:
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Danish, Jaime)
Carice van Houten (Dutch, Melisandre)
Sibel Kekilli (German, Shae)
Oona Chaplin (Spanish, Talisa)

I was wrong.

Why so many Brits? It's a US show adapted from a US book, even if its shot in Ireland and Malta for the most part...

The setting is very European-inspired. Add "English speaking" into that and you're focused on Britain.

GRRM has stated that he got a lot of inspiration from the Wars of the Roses. Quite a few of the characters and events have strong parallels in the history of the British isles. There is even a wall for keeping the wildlings out ;).

Right. Also vaguely british accents convey a much better sense of an "archaic" time.

You can't have American accents in a semi-medieval setting...

Right. Also vaguely british accents convey a much better sense of an "archaic" time.

Apparently the accents used are fairly representational of the regions in the story, too. The northerners, for example, have northern British accents.

Not being British, I couldn't say for sure. But it seems reasonable, and the characters accents do seem to be somewhat consistent depending on where they are from.

I guess it makes sense for the accent. A lot of the non-British actors are playing non-Westerosi (Peter Dinklage is an exception, but you don't have that many good dwarves actors around).

On that note, how much does accent matter to Americans?
