So, here's a forum game! You will create a space ship manufacturing corporation, and take turns (6-month in game increments) designing, building and selling space ships to the factions and companies of the galaxy. The first turn will involve creating new designs, then the second turn will involve testing, refining, and selling them, and so on with every even and odd turn. If you wish to participate, please read the full post.
THE SETTING:
Welcome to the spacial region of New Calradia! A portion of the galaxy with a number of resource-rich and/or habitable planets, it is many decades' travel from Earth and effectively its own isolated (albeit consisting of many planets and stars) civilization. What's more pertinent to you, is that many groups have finally just begun producing resources and manufacturing facilities. No more, the crude, tubular space-shuttles and spindly probes of yore. There is demand for a new era of rocket science- and rocket engineering.
CURRENT TECHNOLOGY:
The performance of all ships is measured in ARBITRARY UNITS, and sometimes not units at all (eg "It's ugly"). All resources, to you, are represented as SPACE DOLLARS (Ж). Ships also have some attributes which are random or not directly affected by individual features, like reliability. Some ship stats may be invisible.
When you design a ship, you can't control exactly what working design you come up with. But you can decide what features you want to include- for example, "A ship which uses solid and ion boosters, and has a large passenger capacity" or "A fast small liquid-engine ship with a laser gun" or even "Whatever we can think of that GOES FAST".
ENGINES:
-Solid Fuel: Disposable, good for getting ships into the air and not much else.
-Liquid Fuel: Fairly powerful, but expensive and heavy.
-Ion Engine: Light and economic, but slow.
STRUCTURE:
-Steel: It's moderately priced, and solid.
-Reinforced: As another material, but heavier and stronger.
COCKPIT:
-One or Two pilot cockpit: One human pilot, or a human pilot and copilot fly the ship.
-Automated flight system: A computer flies the ship. Capable only of very simple instructions and not always reliable.
PAYLOAD:
-Cargo: Brought from planet to planet or accrued from space, in arbitrary units.
-Passengers: Space for a given number of passengers, with life support included.
WEAPONS/TOOLS:
-Mining laser: Breaks up asteroids for ore.
-Scooping arm: Retrieves asteroid chunks and scrap.
-Cannon: Fires lead rounds using solid rocket fuel (gunpowder doesn't work in space). Capable or piercing armor, but not accurate.
-Laser: Accurate, but expensive and weak. A laser and batteries weighs as much as a cannon and bullets.
OTHER:
-Short range sensors: Sensors and communications are on a craft by default
-Long rang sensors: Similar to above, but useful for exploration and military scouting.
THE AVAILABLE CONTRACTS:
This section covers who is in the galaxy and how you can get their money.
-Ultor Mining Corporation is responsible for most of the mining in New Calradia. They are looking to replace their mining craft with something better, and may take multiple ship contracts. They require ships with mining tools which are sturdy enough to resist small asteroid impacts and have a large cargo capacity.
-Various free planets need human transport ships, and are offering various contracts as ships are available. They must be cheap, safe and have a large passenger capacity. They are also seeking cargo ships with similar requirements. Speed is a bonus.
-Some civilian contractors would like to buy flying vehicles for private, planetary use, but the technology doesn't exist yet.
-The Swadian Empire is one of the two major governing military forces in New Calradia. They seek an orderly, peaceful monarchy to unite the free planets. They are seeking military contracts, but only to contractors which have proven themselves reliable.
-The Promian Czarship is the other major governing military force. They have been coming to blows on and off with the Swadians. They seek to promote their military rule and are convinced that they must unite New Calradia militarily against an alien threat. They are seeking military contracts, but only to contractors which have proven themselves reliable.
-Space Banditos are a constant threat to the galaxy. They are currently using ships stolen from the two warring empires, which are in poor repair but still sometimes dangerous to civilians carrying cargo.
HOW TO PLAY:
You will make or share your own company, with the stats below (fill in the blanks)
Name of your Corporation: ___________
You Forum Name:_________
Your Starting Funds: Ж100,000
Your Home Planet:_________ in region _________ (Choose: Swadia, Promia, Free Planets)
Once you've made your company, add what you're doing for your first turn in the same post.
FIRST TURN:
The first half of every year is when prelimary ship design takes place. You can also research another ship part, like what's in the technology list.
Beginning to design a new ship costs Ж25,000. During this phase, you will attempt to create a feasible design, the fruit of which you will have by the beginning of the second turn. This is just, "I want a ship with liquid engines and cargo that's cheap" or the like- pick and choose relevant details from the technology list, I'll add stuff you forget or change stuff that's impossible. You can also make a modification of an existing design (Design X, but with Ion Engines instead of liquid ones) for Ж10,000.
You can also do prelimary research for Ж5,000. Simply suggest what you want to add to the technology list, like "Faster engines" or "bigger, better lasers" and I'll tell you what it will cost to finalize the design or if it's impossible. Only you will have access to this technology at first. You can also attempt to study a technology that exists in the field (chance of success) or study a captured technology (guaranteed success).
SECOND TURN:
During the second half of every year, your options are quite different. You will know what your designs are and their stats. You can make a last-ditch attempt to change them, either fixing a flaw you found (more likely to happen on ambitious designs) or saying "it needs to be cheaper to build!" or the like. You can also say which contracts you wish to fulfill, and give a brief paragraph about why you should receive the contract. If you're successful, then at the end of the turn/beginning of the next turn you will fulfill the contracts automatically, receiving your profit.
You can also do some other things- like broker designs or technologies that aren't yet public to the other players (you'll have to agree on a price). You can also attempt CORPORATE ESPIONAGE during the second turn- PM me.
So, in short:
-Make a corporation
-Post your first turn action, which is thinking of a ship design and maybe a technology or two too
-On the second turn, you will finalize and build your designs
-You will also pitch and sell to contractors this turn
