Pants on Fire?
« on: April 21, 2013, 04:37:33 am »

Hi!

I've got something odd in my fortress: In my common room, there is a burning pair of trousers and a burning cloak on the ground (ignited by a firebreathing FB). They are burning for ages now (Months, maybe a year), and show no signs of finally turning into ashes. The dwarf wearing them is long dead, buried and slab'd, but his clothing is doing the "lux eterna" show.

How the heck can they be extinguished? Hole in the ceiling and assigning a pond zone?

Mystified,
Christian Treczoks

Dear Christian,

It looks like the Dwarf who wore those clothes was a pathological liar. If you can somehow replicate this you can create a sort of border composed of burning pants, which should deter a siege or two. It also makes for a nice centerpiece to any noble's room.

But okay. Here's what you have to do. Close your eyes. Lend me your hand. Do you feel my heart beating? Do you understand? Do you feel the same? You know the rest.

Lovingly yours,
PATRIOT AINyan Thousand

When in doubt, atom smash! You should be able to build a bridge over the pants...

You may be able to designate it to be built, but then you'll have to deal with dwarves coming to move the flaming items out of the way. Attempting to do this is likely to cause more injury than anything else.

Try the pond zone method, and if that doesn't work, it may be time to prepare a hole under them, then channel out the tile to drop them into a drainable chamber full of water. If they still don't extinguish, at least you can just floor them over and forget about them.

Designating a pond over it should work nicely. That's how i put out a piece of charcoal that caught fire in a stockpile and wouldn't stop producing smoke for months.

Burning items will eventually burn away, but unfortunately they take ridiculously long to do so. Extinguishing them is normally the better method to get rid of the smoke - you can even reclaim and use the item.

Why are we so concerned with putting them out?? I would build a shrine around them and dig out a  deep pit in front of them where you can offer goblin sacrifices to the defeated FB's spirit...

I think its a sign from Armok...

Just to be sure, they're not artifact clothing items, are they?  Those will literally burn forever I believe, since artifacts are immune to wear.
