This is almost entirely unlike waking up in one of Duke Chocolate Puff the Charitable's guest rooms, as we expected. The ground feels like sand heated by the sun, our body feels like we slept for two days hanging by our arms, our mouth feels like cotton, and there are highly itchy granules caked beneath our fur.

We've probably been drugged, abducted, and left on a beach somewhere.

While wandering the Northlands, we learned about a dark elven invasion. Sylphy advised offering our services containing the threat to the nearest duke. He was naturally afraid of us, but accepted, offering us the opportunity to gain our own barony if the dark elves were pushed back far enough, and we helpful enough. We had a few successful battles, sending our minions to flank while the Northlander armies engaged the bulk of the forces.

We had just found the bulk of the enemy forces, holed up in a recently captured keep atop a hill. The keep was in poor repair before the war, and in no state to hold us back after the dark elves broke in. The battle would have been more of the same, had they not appeared. The court wizards (well, one real wizard with nearly a dozen apprentices at various stages) did what they had to do to save the kingdom. We still cannot fault them.

It's almost as if we can still hear those horrible voices.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The duke's wizards sacrificed themselves for an immensely powerful spell, flattening the area in front of them. A handful of the army survived; no elf walked away that day. Sylphy used a great deal of energy on a personal shield. Our minions were slain. The contract we'd managed to get with a spirit baron was broken with the loss of his minions.

What was there to do, but return to the duke and report alongside the ragged remnants of the army?

Perhaps he didn't want to kill us outright much more than he wished to risk us reforming our ranks near his lands, that being a particularly dangerous time for those in our profession.

Ask Sylphy to help us find some food, check ourselves for injuries, then look for food and water.

Sounds like a plan.

Ask Sylphy to help us find some food
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Sylphy's minion link (it's more of a two-way bond in this case) was weakened, and is probably in a state of rest. It would take a strong "pull" to attract their attention right now. It could be done, but the spirit would be particularly irksome for a few weeks if we drag it awake without a particularly nice offering.

We are mostly uninjured, aside from some bruises, terrible thirst, and being famished.

Our blank papers (and ink) were ruined. They're not actually needed for contracts, but it's significantly safer and easier than creating and maintaining everything in the air during the binding. In our current state, and from "fishing" around in another plane to attract something, we'd be exhausted after summoning two of the weakest spirits and binding them to basic orders.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It looks like our current state was unplanned. A few minutes of searching the wreckage in our immediate area reveals four servings of slightly damp jerky.

The sun is high in the sky. The terrain past the beach is a forest, as far as the eye can see, in either direction.
We could try to bind a new minion.
We could continue searching for supplies (state what to search for).
We could look around for other survivors.
We could walk between the ocean and forest, hoping to find a stream to follow inland.
We could blunder through the forest blindly.

Find some shade and rest until it is cooler.

If there's other survivors, try to find them.

Do above. If unfruitful, use the driftwood and wreck materials to create a makeshift shelter or raft to swim away.

Will binding a new minion add one we can use, or get rid of Sylphy? If the former, Look for a minion that can help us find objects.

Getting rid of Sylphy would be difficult, even in its current state.
What sort of minion? The lore in this is fluid, as it'll probably be more fun if I'm not creating everything.

Ravens are pretty good at finding things, aren't they? We summon a raven spirit to find things for us and in exchange it gets to keep any shinies it finds while it is summoned? We might get into trouble from what is essentially a thief spirit though...

Ravens are pretty good at finding things, aren't they? We summon a raven spirit to find things for us and in exchange it gets to keep any shinies it finds while it is summoned, excepting
1. anything valued at more than ten (10) units of currency per pound,
2. anything that has an edge that is thinner than the width of a coin,
and
3. anything that contains more than one (1) gram of the following metals, or any derivative of them: gold, silver, steel, platinum, uranium, adamantium, and unobtanium?
Fixed it for you.

We summon it and it starts stealing stuff. I mean, sure, we might only be using it to find things that we have a legally recognised right to acquire, but it is going to grab everything that isn't nailed down and then disappear with it...

This is very good.

As terms of the contract, we can disallow it to leave with anything without us specifically saying that we are okay with the spirit keeping it.

Unless the spirit is particularly gullible, it will not agree to anything that open-ended...
