^ That is a good idea. Also, ask the loyalty probes(we should really ask if they want a name) about the extent of control they have of the nano-machines in our body. For example if someone pumps our body full drugs will the loyalty probes be able filter these drugs out of our body?

Related to the loyalty probes...

The original loyalty probes, according to Ala-Shar, were created by the Vanguard, for the Vanguard.  Our probes are some sort of reverse-engineering attempt by the local scientists, so it's reasonable to assume our probes could communicate with Vanguard probes.  Do our probes know what would happen if we came within "loyalty probe communication range" of the Vanguard?  Ari apparently hasn't fought the Vanguard, so she might not know.

I suppose if our loyalty probes don't know, we could simply ask Ala-Shar.

EDIT: (Also, probe or probes?  The probe(s) refer to themselves as 'we', but it's only one voice (as far as I can tell).  Do multiple physical probes just make a more powerful sentience, or are there multiple distinct sentient probes?)

Oh ****. I've figured it out. It all makes sense now. They truly don't understand this technology, and this is a terrifying kludge. They have taken some kind of general purposed brain machine interface, and hooked it up to the wrong place. The AIs they are running on them were never intended for this, but probably some kind of general-purpose assistant/pet/equal, and more importantly they require a maturation period that these are never given; right now, they are essentially very young children, hence their incompetence. And on top of that the *AIs* loyalty is also just hacked, in this case more literally, plastered on top of their motivational structure rather than integrated into their true goal structure.

Talking to these AIs is VERY IMPORTANT, they are in just the same situation as us, robed from their true context as children and bludgeoned into their own crudely enforced loyalty. We can never beat an intelligence that will quickly become far more experienced with time, but *they* might easily beat their own, static, shallow shackles.

Spread this information quickly. Think of the artificial, nano children!

I'd suggest to Ala-Shar that Ari's brood be integrated into our own.  If the average brood is 1000, and hers is less than 200, then I doubt the military will find a brood less than 1/5 of normal size to be useful.  I realize the decision is probably up to the military branch, but maybe Ala-Shar could put the idea in their heads.

It'd be nice to have Ari as a friend, in any case.  She seems similar to our own character, and the other brood leader (Elianne) is more loyalty probe than human (and probably more or less insane).  And she'll undoubtedly be able to offer a ton of help when we get sent off to fight the Slinkar.

EDIT: It'll sound like an even better idea if Ala-Shar reminds the military that we'll be ready in much less time if Ari's brood is integrated into our own, since they can effectively train us using their own combat experience.

That sounds good. It should at least be possible to persuade them that Ari's brood would be useful as advisers and trainers, given that they have just been through a campaign against our expected foes...

You listen intently to Ala-Shar. Ari was right, the head scientist does seem to care for her creations, even if they are morally and ethically dubious.

Waiting for an appropriate time, you ask:
"Ala-Shar, is Ari's Brood going to pass inspection?"

A frown crosses her face. "No. And however much i think about it, i cannot come up with a viable solution. We cant produce reinforcements for them quickly, it takes years to do so." She turns away, then twirls around again. "You have an idea, don't you?"

You smile. "I do. Integrate Ari and what remains of her Brood into my Brood. Ari and I can act as joint leaders and if my Brood is going to be facing the Slinkar, we may need their experience as I understand they have recently been on campaign against them, which is why they are so depleted anyway....".

Ala-Shar is nodding as you speak. "Excellent idea. I cant believe i didn't think of that. With a few minor adjustments to some programming I could enable cross-Brood communication, allowing successful integration. Fantastic. Hopefully by the military's visit, your broods will be fully integrated and ready to go. There shouldn't be any problems, as far as i can see." She gives you a thoughtful look for a few moments. "You could be useful as an assistant...." You aren't sure if you should respond or whether she was just thinking out loud.

You head back to Ari to tell her the news.

"Ari, can I ask you a question?" She turns to you, with a questioning look. "How would like to merge our Broods? According to Ala-Shar, the military is coming to assess us. She told me that, in your current state things could get.....unpleasant....for you and your sisters. The only downside is that you might be going into combat with the Slinkar within the week...."

She looks at you for a minute, seemingly shocked. She then grins and hugs you. "Thank you. I knew about the inspection, and i was worrying about it. Does Ala-Shar approve?"

"She agreed wholeheartedly. She said it was a great idea, in fact. She is setting it up right now."

"Oh, thank you Pandora." She nearly cries. You can see that her sisters mean a.lot to her. You hug her close. Ahhh, nothing like sisterly love. Ari pulls away, wiping her eyes.

"What is the composition of your Brood at the moment?" You ask.

"Right now, my brood contains 190 sisters. 12 of them are scouts, 7 Infiltrators, 5 Forward Command & Comms, 19 Field Medics, 13 Combat Engineers, 22 Long Rage Specialists, 25 heavy Support, 23 Light assault and 64 Heavy Assault, which includes myself." There used to be a lot more of each, as you can tell. My Brood had a similar composition to yours, if you want to get an idea of the casualties we experienced." She looked sullen again. You feel sorry for her.

Just to test the water, you ask how Ari would feel if she were to put some of her brood under the command of Elianne.

"I would not be comfortable with it, and neither wold my sisters. We stay together." Her expression tells you that she will not change her mind.

After your conversation with Ari, you decide to head to the Brood Leader barracks, which, should your implanted memories serve, be right next to the main barracks for vat-born subjects. On the way, you decide to question the probes in your head about things that have been nagging you.

'Hello, probes. I would like to know some facts about your background. Ala-Shar was not very clear about your origins. All she said was that you were reverse engineered from Vanguard technology. Does that mean the Vanguard use loyalty probes? And, if so, what would happen if the probes in myself or my sisters were to get into communications range of a Vanguards probe? Would you prefer it if i were to call you by a name, and if so, what would you suggest and finally, does each probe have its own sentience, or do subsequent probes just add to the strength of the first probe implanted?'

'Questions, questions.

As you might know, as we are creations of the Matriarchy, we do not hold all of the facts. However, we can tell you that the Vanguard does not, in fact, you loyalty probes. When Ala-Shar said we were reverse engineered, i can only assume she means either her, her team or a team of Morey scientists used the bio-nanomachines found in the bodies of the dead Vanguard coupled with technology from the downed ships systems AI core. As such, we do not think you would be able to communicate with the Vanguard like you can communicate with your sisters.

Although, as we are based off of Vanguard tech, and we may use similar coding and wavelengths, there may be some sort of signal that either they or we can pick up on.

As for a name, if it would help you when talking with us, then you may call us Talli. Lastly, each probe does have its own sentience. We work together and semi-merge. We become one yet we are separate.


You think over the answers as you collect your equipment, weapons and helmet from the lockers in the lab. You thank Talli for their time and slowly head towards where you believe the barracks to be located in the base. You pass multiple storage rooms, barracks, armouries, laboratories, guard posts and admin offices before coming to a rather plain, but very clean looking, barracks, with each Vat-Born having her own small apartment.

You find yours and enter. You have a small living area, suitable to relaxing. Through a door to your right is a bedroom with a large double bed with what feel like satin sheets, although the material is most definitely not satin. The room also contains an on-suite bathroom and walk in wardrobe. The wardrobe contains the a range of tight fitting white suits like the one you wore originally, as well as two pairs of loose white robes. You get out of your armour, and place everything, including your equipment, weapons and helmet into the space space in the wardrobe. You notice the lack of underwear, but don the robes anyway.

You think of another question or two to ask the probes.

Also, ask the loyalty probes about the extent of control they have of the nano-machines in our body. For example if someone pumps our body full drugs will the loyalty probes be able filter these drugs out of our body?

'Hi again Talli. A few more questions. So you have any control over the other nano-technology in my body? Could you help protect me from drugs, true serums or other disadvantageous substances? Could you direct them to damaged body parts, stop bleeding etc?'

'Unfortunately no, we do not have control over them. They are controlled by your slightly modified immune system and respond to any damage or hostile substances like highly advanced, augmented white blood cells. Upside of that is that if anything does in fact impair your mental functions or our mental protection, your subconscious and immune system will still be able to work and hopefully keep you safe.

What we can do, however, is protect you from mental assaults as well as help you stay sane during times of duress, such as torture or mental enslavement, where possible.


Again, you thank the AI's for their time, before undressing, again, and sliding between the sheets of your bed. You cant remember the last time you felt so comfortable. It feels almost like you are floating. It isn't long before you are asleep.

*The next morning* (Five Days left till first deployment).

You wake up, feeling refreshed. Yesterday was a long day. You can tell, due to your internal clock, that it is rather early.

What do you do?

1) Calm. Feeling sorry for Ari. Angry.
2) Mentally and physically fit.
3) Clear thoughts and currently inactive mental factions.
4) Free moving.

Condition: Physically Healthy, mentally Stable.

Have Ari's brood start training with our brood, the odds are that all the broods so far lacked real world training.

Lets do some combat simulations to see how our brood behaves, and see what are certain individuals' strengths and weaknesses. Also, try to get the combat doctrine of Morey for the Slinkar and all known strategies that were effective or ineffective against them.

Once it is on, you analyze its capabilities. The implanted knowledge kicks in almost immediately. it isn't long before you know everything about it.

As well as its good defensive capabilities, it has basic life support systems, waste disposal systems and ration stores for extended operations away from supply sources. It also has large amounts of storage for equipment, extra rations and ammunition, where applicable.

Still in your armour, you decide to go and organise a training drill and simulation for your and Ari's Brood. You find Ari relaxing in a recreation room, along with a few members of your Brood. Ari greets you as you approach:

"Hi, Pandora. Why are you wearing your armour? its not like we have to wear it all the time.".

"Just getting used to it. And i was wondering if it would be possible to get the Brood together to run through a joint drill, just to get the new ones used to combat and maybe run through the strategies we'll use against the Slinkar." You reply.

"Well, we'll need to the topside training district for that. Its currently free. Send a mental communique to the Brood and have them meet us up there in 30 minutes." She says, already heading towards the barracks. She motions for you to follow.

As you walk to her quarters, you decide to ask her a few more questions:

"What is the status of your section of the Brood's loyalty probes? Have they had any success against them?" You ask after making sure no one else is around.

"All of my sisters are about as free as its possible to get with them in our heads. The only reason we haven't gone rogue, is because, as you may or may not have seen, as we are now, we are somewhat dependent on the Morey. We also cannot go back to normal human society. I wont go into details. Also Vanguard has agents on Earth. If any were to see us, even rogue, they might try to take us out think we are spies or something similar."

"Good. I feel uncomfortable around people who seem to be more probe than human.....".

You both approach her quarters. As she gets ready for the drill, you nip back into your room and grab what you need. fortunately, you can fit most of your equipment onto the holding points on your armour. 'This thing is like a full body carry-all. I wonder how much i can carry in total.....' You think to yourself absentmindedly as you check your weapons and re-enter Ari's room.

As you are leaving, after chatting about more general things, you ask her about military doctrine concerning the Slinkar.

"Tricky question. There is no absolute. It mainly depends on the circumstances. They will never go quietly, usually meaning the use of large formations of troops, combined arms and precision strikes, other times it can be blitzkrieg, shock and awe speed runs to try and catch them off guard. If they outnumber us considerably, we try to use a more asymmetrical style of warfare, although that is less effective.

They keep their supply lines and stores well guarded and defended, and leave few weak points in defensive positions. Those they do leave are usually decoys. The Slinkar have specialised units, configured in different ways for different missions. These formations are usually backed up by more multi-function troops to counter unseen circumstances and/or to give an unsuspecting enemy a heart attack

In difficulty, they are second only to the Vanguard. So in the field, watch your back and those of your sisters and be prepared for the unexpected. In the drill that is being set up, we would do well to go through as many different tactics as possible."

You listen intently. It seems the higher ups want to throw the new Broods in at the deep end. Something or someone must be forcing their hands. Maybe their war against the Slinkar isn't going well?

"Ari, what do you know of the status of the war with the Slinkar?"

"It was pretty much a stalemate when I came back from the last campaign. The last ill-fated mission was in fact an attempt to break the stalemate by trying to take out the main planetary command base on Abrigos 9 which organised their defenses for the surrounding 4 systems, on top of the system it itself was in, to try and make way for an assault fleet. It was going fine until some uppity young politicians daughter who wangled the rank of Fleet Admiral, disobeyed orders and decided to try and destroy the base from orbit, completely ignoring intel which stated there were an unknown number of anti-fleet batteries orbiting the planet on top of a large number of planet-based batteries defending the system."

She shook her head, obviously angry.

"So, as expected in that situation, the alarm was raised and all hell broke loose. 200 of my sisters were caught in a kill zone, the rest were pinned down with two dozen dying in a reactor implosion in the bases power plant. The fleet, surprisingly, did make a good account of itself, somehow managing to take out all 12 orbital defence batteries. Then they were torn up by the now online planetside batteries. 2 battleships, a carrier and at least 20 smaller vessels were turned into the systems new asteroid belt in a matter of minutes."

"It was sheer luck that we managed to disable them long enough to get off the planet".

At the conclusion of her tale, you both walk silently to the drill area on the surface of the planet. The planet it self is very Earth-like. Green and pleasant. In the distance you can see sleek, fluid like cities glinting in the sun. It is very, very pretty.

It doesn't take long for the Brood to assemble. You and Ari take it in turns to speak, getting the Brood up to date on what has been decided. You organise the Brood into various formations and runs through a range of military doctrines. The Brood takes to it like a fish to water. They consistently complete their objectives, work well together and push forward no matter what. Even though their enemies are training robots using not lethal weapons, they are a sight to behold and their efficiency is hellishly good for relatively new soldiers. You assume part of it has to be the implanted knowledge, but it looks like enthusiasm plays a large part in the activity too.

You then run through more complex drills, this time you and Ari join in as Brood leaders. Things go even better than before. You spend the whole day training, only breaking twice to rest and eat, until even as enhanced as you are, you and your comrades are panting like dogs in heat and sweating enough to fill several Olympic swimming pools.

You notice you have attracted quite the crowd. Guards, scientists, administrators and even office staff and soldiers stationed in the military base attached to the science facility. Among them you stop Ala-Shar. She seems very impressed and pleased. You wonder just how long she has been there. As the sun is setting, the Brood once again retires for the day. You can see many of them seem to be having mental conversations. 'Good, they are talking to the probes. Best not to let them feel left out....'.

Mentally analysing the days training, the probes chime in:

'It seems that your Brood works well with and without the leadership supplied by yourself and Ari. This is useful information. It makes you far more versatile. If you want, we can aid you in combat in the same way some of your Brood were aided? It would really only bee basic situational awareness, but every little helps.'

You ponder that for a moment. 'I'll let you know tomorrow, my friends, but right now, i just want something to eat, a nice long shower and my bed'.

You get back to your quarters quickly, saying good night to Ari as you do, shower and get into bed after snacking on some food from the mess hall.

*Sometime later* *4 Days till Deployment*

You wake up. What do you do? do you train again or do something else?

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

Spend two days practicing escape and evasion along with finding food and water.
I'm not sure that part is necessary. Our exo-suit has extra rations incase of that situation.
