Jump down the hole to grab the hole so you can get a refund for the hole.

Dude, the PORTABLE HOLE is long gone. It'll probably stop working when it hits the COLD IRON anyway.

We should have thrown the hole AT Dave!

Sad.

Anyways, let's see if we can't have Squishee turn into something with eyes, remove an eye, and make the trade.
What do Stonefleshes eat?

See if you can barter the crazy guy up into throwing your refund into the job payment. If you can, go to the tower and grab one of your swords, before telling him to send you after his stone.

If he doesn't budge, head out to the wild and hunt some fey beings until its time to ward the tower. You might be able to sell them at the shop or interrogate them about the Tall Man.

You ask CRAZY DAVE if he would be willing to add the cost of the PORTABLE HOLE to your store credit after retrieving the SPIRAL STONE.
i'm not sure, one thousand gold is a perfectly reasonable reward for the quest i posted.
You tell him that if he gives you the extra, you'll do it right today.
...eh, alright. but i'm not happy about it!

You retrieve your SWORD and WIZARD'S NOTEBOOK from your TOWER.

Anyways, let's see if we can't have Squishee turn into something with eyes, remove an eye, and make the trade.
What do Stonefleshes eat?
Buy the Forbidden Tome.

You think you will refrain from purchasing anything until you receive your STORE CREDIT.
You don't think SQUISHEE eats anything. He is not an animal, but rather an intelligent inanimate object.

You tell CRAZY DAVE you are ready to go.

ah! splendid.

this item will allow you to travel to my storage area. press the green button to be transported there, and the pink button to be transported back.

Well, time to get going.
SQUISHEE does the button-pushing.

->

You are in what is apparently CRAZY DAVE'S DUNGEON OF TERROR.
You are carrying your SPELLBOOK, BOOK OF MAGIC, THREE WANDS, ENCHANTED SWORD, WIZARD'S NOTEPAD, VAULT KEY, a MANA POTION, and 850 GOLD. You are wearing your HAT, ROBES, and PENDANT.

Make sure we actually brought whatever we were supposed to be trading. Unless I'm misremembering the quest.

Read the sigh/paper/thing.

The sign reads thus:
"to dave: hello dave, this is dave. how are you today? good to know.
if you're reading this note, you've lost your backup teleswitch again. it is on the eight hundred, thirty sixth floor in the fortieth door to the left, third and a half shelf.

to robbers: if you touch my junk i'm going to find you and eat you eyeballs, then give a stern lecture to your empty sockets.

to the guildlings i hire to find my shit: welcome to crazy dave's dicount dungeon of terror! this is a pocket universe where i store the wondrous objects that i gather during my travels. good luck, you're going to need it! even i don't know where half the rooms in this place are, and i built it!"

Make sure we actually brought whatever we were supposed to be trading. Unless I'm misremembering the quest.

You don't think you're supposed to be trading anything?
Unless you're mistaken, all you have to do is find the SPIRAL STONE, which is probably buried waist deep in unspeakable horrors right now if this QUEST is going in the direction you think it is.

We're a wizard, we have solutions for this!

Attempt a little scrying to get a feel for the direction of the Spiral Stone, or its exact location relative to us if possible. And if we've got the mana, try to perceive what scary shit is between us and the stone.

Head off in a random direction, and look in the nearest room that way. Investigate any possible magical objects in said room.

Cast spell: Locate Object

You pull out your SPELLBOOK and begin searching for a spell that suits your needs.
After a little reading you find something that sounds right- OGLIK THE FORGETFUL'S SEARCHING LIGHT.

You cast the spell, and it immediately whizzes past your head to the left.
The cheap DIVINATION/ILLUSION spell should leave an easy-to-follow trail to the nearest spiral-shaped stone.
Hopefully CRAZY DAVE doesn't keep too many mundane spiral-shaped stones around.

Head off in a random direction, and look in the nearest room that way. Investigate any possible magical objects in said room.

Well, this DUNGEON CRAWL is off to a great start. Just amazing.

You are confronted by a small SALT ELEMENTAL.
