Well, it looks like the developers carefully worked on the first 10-15 hours of gameplay and then said 'meh,  @#!*%  it, the players have already bought the game so why should we bother anymore'. I got this game yesterday and enjoyed everything up to the second boss (whom I killed on the second try with Shinobi that one-shotted his Furies), but then the game just broke apart. Usually I get ~1k per life, maybe 3k if I get exceptionally lucky with a miner, but the cheapest upgrades remaining cost 800 and all runes 1500+. I only have the first three tiers of all equipment unlocked and the blood ones, and that's it. If I do a run and die with less than 1k remaining, I've basically wasted 15 minutes without gaining anything (because 6% discount at Charon is just laughable). The difficulty gap is astonishing - I have consistently cleared more or less entire forest and still cannot go further than a few rooms into the tower. Needless to say, I still have to go (or rather breeze) through the castle with enemies 50 levels below me every time. As a result, I'm stuck grinding for money to get pitifully insignificant upgrades. Meh.
Isn't the tower supposed to be finished after the underground?

According to the map in the beginning, it's Castle - Forest - Tower - Darkness.  That's also how the Prince goes about it in his journal.

Going from what I've learned in other roguelikes, I'm betting the Tower and Darkness aren't meant to be methodically cleared.  By that point you're probably high level and have the gear you'll need, and usually that means carefully but quickly heading for the boss and avoiding unnecessary conflict (nobody tries to full clear Astral in Nethack or Hell in Crawl, or any floors in Angband, for example)

If I'm making a run for gold I don't usually have much trouble getting at least 5k or so. I got 8k in a run with a barbarian just this morning.

When you're trying to make gold in a run it's all about surviving, a large part of that is knowing what battles not to fight. So try to avoid any rooms that are especially dangerous, like minibosses (who will commonly kill me a couple of times before I beat them), or those "kill all enemies" fairy chests.

The late game upgrades like Rerolling and the 9th class don't significantly increase in price with the early game stat boosts, I've learned.  The strength, int, and health boosts increase them by like 10 gold.  So if you're getting like 2000 gold a run and can't seem to progress, don't be afraid to buy those boosts if you've gotten all the other big ticket items and don't have anything else you need to buy.  A couple cheap strength upgrades is a big damage boost, my new paladin is hitting almost as hard as my old shinobi.

EDIT:  More pro tips from game guru squid:  Peripheral artery disease makes spike traps ignore you.

Spoiler: I got the 9th class (click to show/hide)

I got a chance to try out the Crowblaster Lich described earlier on.  It's pretty good but has one big weakness, there's a limit to how much HP  you can convert.  For the castle and most of the forest you're unstoppable, just crowstorm your way through, get lots of HP, and use it to refill your mana and increase your bar.  Then around the time you've mostly cleared the forest, you hit your cap, which is based on level (around level 67 I could get 300-something max mana), and you can no longer convert HP.  That also means you can't use HP to refill your mana.  So at that point you've got good max HP and a ridiculous mana bar, along with high spell damage, but that doesn't mean much if you can't get any mana.  Next time I'm gonna try it with balance runes and see if that helps me out.

So the game turns into make a run for the boss -> die -> get no money because you didn't grind -> restart in exactly the same condition?

I'll start by saying I'm certainly no authority on the game, as I've only been playing it for a few hours, and of that time I've restarted twice due to setting things up to record my run through the game as a bit of 'light' fun between my other Let's Play projects.

But for what it's worth, from someone who bought the game for full price (roughly £10) I'm having a blast. Aside from the whole 'just got a new game' few hours of playing, I imagine I'll be playing this one quite casually over a long period of time, making a little progress each time I pick it up. It's a very easy game to pick up, by the way, but equally easy to put down again, which is something I like. It has an echo of that 'one more turn' effect, but it's no where near as strong as say, Civ, a game I'll often play relentlessly for a couple of days and eventually burn out because I can't pull myself away lol. I can be my own worst enemy in that regard ;)

All in all, I'm really enjoying it, and I have little doubt that I'll get more than my money's worth out of this game.

P.S. Dementia... argh! ;)

Oh god I am not good at this game at all, this is really embarassing.

The game itself is fun, but I've never played a "metroidvania" style game, ever, and apparently I don't have anything remotely resembling the instincts needed for this.

I did kill the first boss, though!

The game itself seems fun, but some of the traits are plain "I don't want to deal with this, ever" - dementia, vertigo, that one that makes enemies knock you three screens back. Also it's really grindy. All in all the traits seem like the game's weakest point.

I feel Spelunky is a lot better [possibly for me?] as a roguelike jump&run, but this is pretty nice, too. I'll probably keep playing it for a week or so, trying to get some better items.

Well, it could also be that you're just not very good/not ready for those levels yet.  I just tried the Maya and made it a good way in without ever having made an earnest attempt at it, so I'm guessing I was probably wrong about sprinting.

I got all the runes.  Once they're gone the fairy chests start dropping stat boosts.  They're not huge, but considering Sprint-Sprint-Sky is pretty much necessary to get through a lot of the mobility puzzles and that only leaves two free slots, they're almost guaranteed to be more useful than a rune.

Removing my vault and dash runes tends to get me killed when I remember I removed them a little bit too late.

Your whole family has the hero gene, which a) makes them **** like jackrabbits and b) commit suicide in very heroic ways.

Or maybe it's like, after they've lived a semi-normal life in a fantasy world, taking the various careers and having had kids, they get a weird compulsion to the chase the family's White Whale, and sink their whole livelihood on rebuilding the family home (built another castle on that castle in the swamp, it sank...)

Rogue legacy is the story about a genetically hard-coded midlife crisis.

Whut're yew, sum kinda book reader college pinko?  Get in that there castle afore I get the switch! Nobama!

I beat the second boss, and I'm once again veering back toward my original idea of rushing.  You can clear the castle and forest, and that's a lot of gold but also a lot of time.  If you think you're ready to fight a boss though, doing full clears doesn't seem prudent.

My current "default" setup is mostly ranger gear, but with blood cape and knight sword (only because I haven't found anything better).  Then vault and sprint, and the other three runes depend on what class I'm playing.  Most classes just take three vamp runes.  Lich gets three siphon runes and takes the blood set, seeing as his ability negates the HP loss.

Spellsword seems best with cheap fire-and-forget spells like scythe and dagger.

Hokage is still awesome in general, paladin is pretty good now that I've got decent gear, same with barbarian.  I'm still not a big fan of the archmage or the assassin.  I mean, my assassin has a chance on each attack to hit slightly harder than my hokage hits on every attack!  How exciting!

If I'm doing a "standard" run, IE with a fresh dungeon and a focus on getting lots of gold I think I like barbarians the best. The high health doesn't seem that useful, until you realise that chicken legs scale with your health, while vamp runes/gear does not.

I currently use full guardian armour, a sky sword, and vault, dash, haste, vamp, balanced runes. I'm so tanky and deal enough damage that I typically only get in danger of dying once I reach the tower.

I actually just had a couple of really great runs just today. In my first run I wound up with almost 30k gold after clearing all of the castle, forest, and tower, including a couple of lower level minibosses, then died half way through the darkness. This would have been more than 30k except that I lost a large chunk of money to the second chest game I encountered.

Then I since I had the special thing that let me pass without paying the toll I decided to see if I could go even further, I wound up ending that run with 44 thousand gold.

I decided for the heck of it I'd just dump all the money into crit chance, I now have a natural 40% critical hit chance. Which is kind of cool, though I think I could have better spent it on attack or more health.

I feel like the assassins shadow walk thing has a bit of a delay on it. Is it just me? Or does it?

Because. I dunno. One would think the assassin would be great at killing the first boss. But I found myself getting hit anyway.

Edit: Also I think it is worth mentioning that I totally hate the doom paintings. Those fucks laugh so smugly despite the fact that they are almost the weakest and easiest enemies in the game. What are you laughing about when I killed you from across the whole freaking room in one shot?!?

Gah this game is hard. Demoralizing, too, when it can take you 7 runs to find a groove enough to collect enough gold, to make progress somewhere.

I wish it detected my USB Logitech controller, I feel like I'd be struggling less than on my keyboard.

No real opinions on classes yet other than Barbarian, the HP is nice. Shinobi killing shit immediately is almost nicer.
