I figured out a way to trap the game's logic and make yourself invulnerable.  Equipping lots of vampiric gear will trigger the game's carefully crafted Pissing You Off System (PYOS™) and you'll never take a hit, thus making your vampiric gear wasted.  However, since you don't get hit, you don't need it, and you win.  Suck on that, Skynet.

As for the original question, have you tried grace runes?  THey make the game easier but for lower rewards (but you could get farther)

Personally my favorite class is Shinobi.

You can add new names easily by editing one of two .txt files in the games folder.
Added a few myself, tough I have yet to actually see those names ingame.

And are you sure about the lich's HP cap?

Yeah, it's true, the Lich HP cap is high but not more than a barbarian gets.  They're okay but not that great, an Archmage with dextrocardia is everything a maxed Lich is but better.

After playing this horribly long and addictive drug fun game i've found that i do my best with the lich king - blood armor set - crow spell combo.
generally generating crazy amouts of hp return which then when capped could be turned to MP and then repeating the cycle thus creating a raven blasting death machine

First reaction: Oh MY, the default keybindings are awful.

What should I be dumping the little gold I get into? (Even 500g is a stretch for me at this point.)

Put one point in each manor upgrade, to unlock additional upgrades, and no more unless you know what you're doing.  Runes and equipment are cheaper and more flexible than the base upgrades, since you can tailor your loadout for each life.

Two sprint runes and one fly rune should be enough to get you through the game and clear most of the fairy chest challenges.  The rest I put in vampirism, but there are probably other viable options.  Gear-wise I'm using mostly blood armor, it's very heavy and reduces your HP, but I'm up to 10HP per kill right now, which is crazy.

My thoughts, speculations, etc.

Paladin sucks.  Nothing special, and the shield will just drain your mana.  I guess equipping siphon runes could help but bleh.

Barbarian I'm not so sure about.  Not that strong but shout pops projectiles which can get you through a couple fairy chest challenges, and with all my vamp runes I'm practically unkillable.

Archmage with Dextrocardia seems pretty awesome, you basically end up a barbarian with a much more useful ability and free siphon which covers for the smaller mana pool.

Assassin sucks.

Shinobi's awesome.  Huge damage, crazy mobility, probably my favorite class.

Miner is good for getting lots of money and since the combat's mostly skill-based it's pretty good despite its weakness.

I'm not sold on Spellsword but he seems pretty decent.

Not a fan of the lich but I'll try that crowstorm guy when I get a chance.

There's one more class but it's very far up the manor and costs 5000 gold.  I'm not going to spoil anything but it's the opposite of worstiality.

So have you pretty much already crushed the game or is there more for you to do?

I'm nowhere near.  I've killed the first boss and fought the second one once (I died), so I've still got two zones I've basically never explored, and two bosses I've never seen.

Woosh this game is pricey especially for what it is... I'll have to do a LOT of delicate research.

I wonder if this game has sort of what I'll call the IVAN factor (it needs a better name). Where eventually you get genuinely good at this game even though it is a roguelike.

Well, it looks like the developers carefully worked on the first 10-15 hours of gameplay and then said 'meh, fuck it, the players have already bought the game so why should we bother anymore'. I got this game yesterday and enjoyed everything up to the second boss (whom I killed on the second try with Shinobi that one-shotted his Furies), but then the game just broke apart. Usually I get ~1k per life, maybe 3k if I get exceptionally lucky with a miner, but the cheapest upgrades remaining cost 800 and all runes 1500+. I only have the first three tiers of all equipment unlocked and the blood ones, and that's it. If I do a run and die with less than 1k remaining, I've basically wasted 15 minutes without gaining anything (because 6% discount at Charon is just laughable). The difficulty gap is astonishing - I have consistently cleared more or less entire forest and still cannot go further than a few rooms into the tower. Needless to say, I still have to go (or rather breeze) through the castle with enemies 50 levels below me every time. As a result, I'm stuck grinding for money to get pitifully insignificant upgrades. Meh.

Yea, cost really is a little steep. I've been watching NorthenLion play (Read: Checking youtube constantly for uploads) and it definitely is the kind of game that is entertaining to watch, I think the more gimmicky traits like colorblindness and such really add to that, a lot more than they would add to actual game play. The levels are random enough that things don't seem too repetitive yet unlike say The Binding of Issac. As for actually playing it myself... I think I will wait for a price drop.
Still, a good contribution to games I have started calling 'RNG run' games, a category including FTL, Risk of Rain and Spelunky. I think roguelike is very misfitting, and roguelike like isn't actually saying anything. The essence of these games is to make short runs against the random number generator, rather than the careful calculation and planning of a roguelike.

I feel like I'm becoming a bitter old idealist, but I feel like adding the 'Gay' trait was uncalled for. Not because I object to homosexual characters, but making homosexuality into something to draw attention to as a joke is not something I would encourage. Not that I think the game is homophobic, or should be boycotted, or that trait should even necessarily be removed now that it is in. Games are art, and art as individual pieces shouldn't be subject to political correctness, it is just a joke I'm not really laughing at.

It is possible that this is just one of those games that leaves great first impressions but the game just devolves as it goes along.

No I understand what you mean. By making "gay" a trait in the same leagues as the other in game disabilities and other such, they are drawing attention to it in a negative connotation a sort of "ha ha you are gay" sort of way.

Risk of Rain is interesting because eventually you just end up with everything. Making the randomness white noise in the long run. It is probably one that I feel loses its "RNG" aspect once you get to a certain skill level (and is also broken).

While Faster then Light randomizes certain events but ultimately isn't "that" random. It is a game that rearranges the order of events but you can pilot through the same paths if you knew what you were looking for (it is why some good plays can win consistently as well).

and Spelunky, yeah I really like Spelunky and it is what I use as an example of a game that uses its randomized elements well to accompany the gameplay. Especially since Spelunky's level generation system is actually built in accordance to the avatar's abilities, if there is a jump you barely can reach it, if there is a fall you can barely survive it. It is actually the standard I hold games like Terraria to (and terraria FAILS!).

Terraria I would say is a 2d sandbox survival...
And while I agree that some of these games are more fitting to the ideal than others, that is true of all games in a genera. Especially in a new and emerging style like we are now seeing. I personally can't wait until something more Zelda like shows up, in a deeper than skin deep way than Issac did.

Also, is it just me or is 'The entire balance thing totally goes out of whack later on' becoming a bit of a theme in a lot of games?

I dont really see what makes it rogue like, game continues from where you left if you want and you dont actually lose anything unless you were really low on gold... and thats the closest feature to roguelike it has.

Great game still, fun grind and entertaining.

..................................Just sad that it requires 2ghz cpu to run 2d.......................... Can play df with this comp but rogue legacy wants to be way too slow :P

Paladin and shinobi are the ones i have managed to get best score so far (Shinobis ability to 1shot everything right away in 1st castle part rocks!). Miner is waste of time as shinobi or paladin can just smash much more skulls for more gold. I like spellswords and shinobis most of the classes. I would still give paladin a big + with the decent stats and the shield block can be handy sometimes, even blocks traps and can keep blocking long row of damage for the one manatick.

Assasin and wizards are rather bad at start, but i can see assasing with +crit% and +critdmg upgrades on castle being rather good later.

... it is just a joke I'm not really laughing at.

Yeah felt the same way.

I'm enjoying this, but am nowhere near good at it yet. It's hit a nice spot just before frustration for me. Enjoying death - but also swearing at the screen.
