How do I get something taken down from a website.
« on: April 16, 2013, 12:00:07 pm »

My ninth grade English teacher thought it was a great idea to force her students to post poems on this site called Poetry.com. This was a terrible idea.

Years later, that still comes up when you google my name. It isn't helping me get a job. It's nothing too bad, but I want it gone.

I don't remember what email I used way back in high school. Is there any way to get these stupid things taken down.

Send a nice email to the site administrator.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

It's times like these I'm glad I have a ridiculously generic name.

I wish there was a way to make every teen poem disappear. Not only for your sake, but for the sake of humanity.

I suggest signing up with another account, and talking to an administrator from there if that website has some kind of a forum system or a private message system or something.

Honestly I think job hirers pay too much attention to the internet.

It is easy to essentially murder someone's job application just by saying terrible but untrue things about them on the internet.

a) Send a nice email to Poetry.com's webmaster (or other good contact address), asking them politely to take the content down.  Their Terms of Service are ridiculously territorial in terms of copyright (basically by posting content you're giving them all rights to everything with the possible exception of your firstborn child), so I'd steer clear of getting mired in that particular swamp if at all possible.  Nice email with an explanation will probably be far more successful than strong email with mentions of copyright.

b) Once they've removed your content, you can get Google (and I assume other search engines) to update their records - Google has a help page (http://www.google.co.uk/intl/en-GB/policies/faq/) which gives some info.  Other search engines will probably have similar processes.

c) If it's still coming up a while after you've done all the above, it probably means your content's been copied/mirrored somewhere else.  Hunt it down and get it taken down.  Then update search engines again.  Rinse.  Lather.  Repeat.

Oh man. That sucks. Luckily my family was very weird about teachers publishing my name, work or pictures on the webz. One teacher tried to take my picture for the class website and I refused. She snapped my pic anyway real quick and put me up and was nearly fired. I was transferred from the class and all sites were taken down.

Are you sure you aren't worrying too much about something silly? Do they really know it's your poem? Is it really that bad?

If none of that works, you can get a lawyer to write a Cease & Desist letter and send it to them. The objective in this is not to engage them in legal action, but to scare them into taking it down. This will cost you, though.

Possible, but that sounds... laughable. :P

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

Oh, right. That line seems exactly like what an American would say. Wacky Americans and their trigger-happy lawyers :P

I wish we could still duel each other with pistols to solve things. It could save a lot of paperwork.
