Revo: Proficient bowyer
« on: April 15, 2013, 09:25:14 pm »

Recently, I have undertaken the task of apprenticeship to a master bowyer dwarf... I mean man. I have come away with much sought after knowledge and a fine piece of equipment built by my own hand. It took me around 40 hours of construction to get it from a couple blocks of wood to the current state. I used an African wood called Babinga and bamboo for limbs. the black and red streaks are fiberglass and over the top and backs of the limbs is clear fiberglass. It pull around 45 pounds at 29 inches and measures 66 inches in length.

Don't know anything about bows, but that looks pretty sweet. Most of the ones I've seen don't look nearly that artistic.

It is an art form much like violin making or furniture making. I probably spent half the time building it sanding the wood to get it smooth. I was really luck in that the piece of wood I used was exceedingly beautiful

You did a great job, I like the overall shape, and you did some impressive and artistic job with the way the fiberglass inserts blend with the riser.

I'm not that experienced when it comes to bows, I just know how to shoot them, and to me, you are a tillering god.
The only minor nagging thing, it seems to my eye that it's slightly hinging near the riser, but I may be wrong. Maybe it's the picture, maybe I just don't know enough.
Away with evil thoughts!

Questions, now!

Do those limbs work with fast flight string? Or you'd rather not shave a tip?
Is it a Dacron string you're using?
Is it a fast bow? At the moment I'm stuck with a 58 pounder but it's lazy as hell. Horrible.
What did you use to make the arrow rest?
Think you could make a Holmegaard?
How much hand shock do you get?

Either way, from now on, you are a God in my pantheon.
I'm so watching this thread!
More pictures, please.

I'm 99% sure I have a fast flight sting on it.

I haven't done a speed test on it yet but it seems to be very quick. I added an extra bamboo lamination for power
What did you use to make the arrow rest?
two small pieces of leather. the smaller one was place under the other in order to make a bump for the arrow to sit on.

Think you could make a Holmegaard?
I think that is a self bow so it would be VERY different than making a composite but anything is possible. a lot of the same foundations.

Next to none

I'm not sure I know what you mean by hinging. I'm not an expert archer really. Just getting into the came so I am sorry if some of my replies sound somewhat ignorant.... anyways more pictures!

Awesome.
Please disregard my hinging comment, now that I saw the shape of the bow, I was wrong.
Anyways, hinging is when the limbs bend in a spot, a lot more than they do in the rest of the areas. Which is obviously bad since it concentrates all the strain on the "hinge", and it causes the bow to break.

You could always try to use a couple of short-trimmed fur bits for the arrow rest, I find them to work better, but yes, they do wear out in time.

I tip my hat to you, sir. You are a true artist and a craftsman.

That's very nice. The patterns look different but very awesome from the front/behind.

Can you tell me about your shooting technique?

Are you using anchor points? And if so, where?
Or are you string walking? Face walking?

From the pics I think I can tell you're not gap-shooting.

I know nothing about archery or bowyer-ing, but I can imagine how difficult it is. That bow looks amazing, and I'm glad you've actually found something worthwhile to do. I don't think many people do that anymore (both make bows and worthwhile things in general :P).

My middle finger right at the edge of my lip and/or my thumb tucked in and following my jaw bone.Right now I'm using the arrow as a sight an compensating for drop like on a rifle by aiming high or low. When I get a little more advanced I will probably learn to gap shoot as it seems like the best style to me.

Yes, I hope so. I would like to make one for my dad and another couple to keep. I want one that's a bit higher poundage for deer hunting, but this one will work fine for now.
