NPR just (read: about an hour ago) Did a story with a mechanic that was working on his car. Apparently he came down the day after the bombing demanding he got his car back, but the mechanic had most of the parts off, so he couldn't. Is it just me or are these guys really, really bad at this?

If the dude has a smartphone and is using it... shouldn't they know where he is? Or at least have SOME idea?

Well, it's tough to track a smartphone if you don't know who bought it. He could have well stolen one or bought a new one and is using wifi.

Pretty sure they have SOME idea. Not sure just how accurate the tracking on those things is.

Basically, they have to figure it out depending on which cell towers his phone is contacting. If the connection is somewhere in Cell Tower A, for example, then they know he's within a certain distance of it. If it's also in contact with Cell Tower B, then it's somewhere between the two.

As for the GPS, those things can be turned off.

Holy shit. I feel like sometimes I am surrounded by conspiracy nuts. Are they going to fucking occupy the neighborhood for 10 years? NO! They just lifted the cordon, and I just saw on the news that people have heard gunfire. Jesus fucking christ, you guys think this is Europe? No, this is 'Murica, home of big guns and fucking destroying anyone who fucks with it. Remember Osama? They launched a raid without ANY WARNING whatsoever into pakistan to the government just to fuck that guy over. The Government has a revenge fantasy with anyoe that fucks with it, and that won't change.

CNN's banner made me chuckle. "Live coverage of the manhunt." I pictured reporters and camera crews running down the streets behind the police and military shouting "What about that guy? Is that him?"

Makes me imagine the relevant scene from Fahrenheit 451.  (Not going to spoil that for you, though.)

Still, don't they have helicopters or something to track the car? I've never heard of someone getting into a firefight with significant police forces and then manage to escape...

My bet is that between nabbing one guy's corpse and trying to reduce collateral damage, they backed off and he got really, really lucky. There may not have been any helicopters around to track him at that particular moment, but information is still pretty vague.
