Doesn't the northeast have a bunch of old IRA fugitives hiding along it? Not hard to imagine there could be some "lone wolf" crazy guy with knowledge of making bombs among those.

Except their beef has never really been with America, and they share cultural heritage with pretty much the whole of freakin' Boston. The IRA hasn't been a real force for terrorism in years, partly due to them trying to reform their own image and the leaders of the IRA trying to (or succeeding in) becoming active in politics.

There have been some splinter groups of the IRA (Real IRA, Continuity IRA, and others who nobody cares about) who want to restart violent activities, though.  This could be their attempt to make a name for themselves (although it really doesn't fit the normal IRA MO at all).

The way the bits of information that are publicly availiable fit together it seems to me very unlikley to be anything else.

I didn't say IRA itself was behind it, just that if it was a "lone wolf" who did it, one of those fugitives having gone over the Crazy Cliff might have both knowledge and experience with making and planting bombs.

Breaking news: The BBC are reporting that a suspect has been identified from CCTV footage.

Press conference at 9 PM GMT (5 PM ET). Apparently an arrest is going to be made.

I'm sorry, but there's no evidence that this was a right-wing extremist group attack. You can't pin it on them without having a good reason. If we're going by the "Evil Republican Tea Party Members" stereotype, then by bombing they must have wanted to kill blacks or Muslims or whoever MSNBC is saying that the Tea Party wants to kill. But this was just a plain, ordinary event, with no majority of the aforementioned groups.

You can, however, see how fact-free CNN is when they start to blame the bombings on the the Right immediately afterwards. Never let a crisis go to waste, right?

Well, statistically it's likely to be a right wing nutjob, but that's not particularly meaningful or useful. Certainly no evidence beyond statistics that this is caused by one of them, to my knowledge.

But IF one were to put money down, it would probably be one of the better bets. Far from a safe bet, but one of the better ones.
