In other news I have a theory about why the bombs where detonated 7-10 seconds apart. If the bomber did use a cellphone activated design, that's about the time it would take to hit dial (or hit the speeddial button) and have the call connected.

It's already known that at least 1 didn't use a cell phone. My guess would be it was simply a pair of timers or watches of some sort. If you wanted both your bombs to go off at the same time, you would tell it 'go off at 10:00AM' or 'go off at this precomputed time offset from now which coincides with 10:00AM.' Due to inaccuracies in either a timer's speed or a watch's time settings, a time difference of a few seconds could easily be expected.

It'd be interesting to know what the Bbomber wanted to achieve. The bomber made 5 bombs yet only 2 succeeded in even going off. Would the other 3 have detonated if disposal units didn't defuse them? Were they made of leftovers from the first two?

CNN reports that officials are saying there were only two bombs, period. Suspicious packages found the day of were detonated out of precaution but none of them turned out to be explosive.

So. Two bombs, that's all. Which also means a 100% success rate.

Watching shows like Mythbusters and other programs where pyrotechnics are involved, it seems like even professionally-made bombs can fail to detonate on cue, leading to some very tense moments as they try to figure out if the fuse simply fizzled out or if it just delayed.

Doesn't the northeast have a bunch of old IRA fugitives hiding along it? Not hard to imagine there could be some "lone wolf" crazy guy with knowledge of making bombs among those.
