I hope that someone will protest, like some Denver cops who stood up to Obama and told him not to use them as political props. If people with common sense (read: not politicians) don't make themselves heard, then we will have a lot of more invasive "security" measures.

It's mindsets like that which cause things like this to happen in the first place. FYI before everyone high-horses on the I'm the protector of your privacy and freedom spiel none of that junk protects my little girl when an extremist decides to bring an explosive to a public event.

Considering the timing, I'm guessing this was professional.
Considering the 50% failure rate, I'm guessing it wasn't. Plus, I think the timers were faulty. My hunch is that they were meant to be near-simultaneous, and/or were meant for closer to the winners crossing the line, when the crowd would be at its peak.

And +1 to what Mictlantecuhtli said. People who start getting shrill about civil liberties before anything has been done irk me bigtime.

*scratches head* About the only thing that actually does protect in that situation is to not have public events. Period. Secret to everyone, there's not actually a way to stop that sort of thing if someone genuinely wants to go through with it. There's always gaps. There's always a way to exploit them to do harm. Physical protection is inefficient and generally quite imperfectly effective. It has its place, and a certain degree is reasonable and up to a point worth the cost, but at its core this sort of thing is not a question of security. It's a question of motivations, values... what causes people to do things like that and how to demotivate them from doing it without substantial negative effects. And physical demotivation... deterrents, security, etc., so forth, so on has... thresholds. Points of decreasing efficiency. Points where going beyond a certain degree of implementation backfires and increases motivation. I won't go so far as to say the states are there yet on the domestic front, but... there's a lot more to be pissed off about than there was a decade ago, I'd say. Especially considering how at odds invasive security in general is to a good chunk of the American ethos.

But yeah, it's going to depend on what happens next on the civil liberty front. Given what's happened since 9/11 and how the fear culture has been propagated and exploited, though... it's understandable that folks are kinda' preemptively worried. Hopefully the reaction will be sane and effective.

I think what Mict is saying is that when the cops are making good-faith efforts of increased security while they get a handle on what's going on, it's counterproductive to start yelling "Help, help, I'm being repressed!" over things like bag searches or security checks.

I'd liken it to people who get shrill about 2nd Amendment rights without acknowledging that hey....we have a problem with guns in this country. Especially guns and crazy people.

I'm all for civil liberties but for the next couple of weeks, I think it's reasonable to expect heightened security at public events. It's about rational compromises and avoiding extreme responses in either direction.

It's like people who flinch when I wind up for another punch, amirite? It's like "come on, I haven't even hit you yet this time!"

I think the response and worry is perfectly reasonable, considering what's happened before.

Except that shit actually *did* blow up, something that hasn't really happened in a dozen years or so around here. Kinda makes a difference.

The people talking about civil rights are the ones that are flinching, because they know what comes next. People feel threatened, and afraid, and they feel the need to be reassured, and they'll sacrifice a lot for that feeling.

FYI before everyone high-horses on the I'm the protector of your privacy and freedom spiel none of that junk protects my little girl when an extremist decides to bring an explosive to a public event.
None of things they'll be opposing will protect your little girl, either. There's no benefits to be gained from releasing that fist, but I doubt that's likely to stop you.

Running what?

Running in the marathon, I'm guessing
Yeah  he got a pretty bad score tho

I heard the bombs were "artisan-work" whatever that means. So I'm guessing domestic as well

Artisan-work says well-crafted to me.  Bombs aren't like guns, it's pretty hard to make a real bomb that kills a lot of people and deploy it without killing yourself.  I've heard there was a Saudi in questioning as a person of interest and that his house had been raided.

I'm still leaning towards whoever did it didn't make the bombs in his backyard.  Do we know anything more than the bearings?  Was it a pipe bomb or something sophisticated?  As for shape, yeah, there's at least one picture of a guy with both his legs blown off at the knees, and most of the injuries are to the feet and lower legs.  I think it was designed to maim people.

From what I heard, the bombs were cased in pressure cookers filled with scrap metal, nails, and ball bearings. They weren't all that advanced, and were probably cobbled together by someone who learned how to on the internet.

It's cute that you use any reason to stoke fear of oppression but this isn't the case at all. Unless it's less oppressive to get your legs blown off by an extremist than it is to get your bag searched. Don't carry bongs around in the next two days in Boston if you're not a moron. I don't give a shit about someone's feelings since, you know, the person(s) involved are not caught. So I'd appreciate this hollow "I care more about your liberty than you!" attitude bit of yours to end now since I don't want people's main political output to be blowing up children, dude.

Ahaha, I had mentioned how violently enraged I was going to become when people started using the death of children to push their political agendas! Time to ignore the thread for a day or two, whee!

False alarm guys, not terrorism; just someone trying to prove Randall wrong about the worst thing that can happen with a pressure cooker. :P
