Also, BTW, I live in fucking Boston. That guy scares me. I could not go to work today because of him.

I may be naive, or whatever, but if there was a guy heavily armed running around my my neighborhood, I would want every fucking police unit in the city on him.
You locked down an entire city for one murderer.

How have cities ever dealt with murderers before.

And this isn't even just all police units being on alert. This is locking down the city, telling everyone to remain indoors and searching everyone's houses with police dressed up like an army battalion.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

If this were happening here after 7/7 I would call the police. Then with a dawn of shocking realization...

Well, technically it's the city that prevented us from going to work today, not this guy.

Hey, those pictures look almost exactly like Martial Law in communist Poland in the eighties.

Just without tanks. And with wealthier population.

This is still going on?
This guy is pretty good at evading capture. Although every asshole and his twitter account making a up to day map of fuckery might not be helping...

How exactly did your police loose him? He was in a firefight, and then ran away? And they lost it?

It's frigthening enough to have the whole town locked down by armed troops, it's worse to know they're not really competent.

Also, I don't think we have that many paramilitary police in my whole country.

Piecing together what I heard, one of the brothers was gunned down while the other drove away. And now that everyone is posting information about police movements all over the internet, he has an extra resource to help evade capture.

Sad to say, but if you're just now surprised at the quasi-military character of urban law enforcement in the USA, you haven't been paying attention. (Which is entirely understandable if you're not from here.) I'll be musing on this for a long long time, but so far I feel that this is a justifiably cautious approach to the situation. But I reserve the right to change my mind later, when I have more information on the situation. (My main criticism is that they could probably have lifted the majority of the lockdown perfectly safely quite a while ago, and if so, really should have.)

I only hope that they find him quickly and capture him without any more loss of life.

Hmm... 'lockdown' has been going on for roughly 15 hours now, if the NPR timeline is fairly accurate.

/tasteless
Anyone taking bets?

My bet? They won't be able to keep the lockdown on the whole city much longer. So many people I know say their neighborhoods are practically back to normal despite the shelter-in-place advisory. If it's still on when I get up tomorrow, I'm going to the goddamn park because screw this I'm miles away and won't let the Bad Guys ruin another beautiful day!

This makes me want to play Half Life 2.

I've, er, been playing Marathon to pass the time... Don't judge me! I was playing it before the bombing too! [/half-hearted protest]

20 bombs were found/went off last night and the whole twitter shit isn't helping.

Aaaand the lockdown is off. Like there's much point to it this late in the day. Oh Boston, why can't you stay open to a reasonable hour like other cities?

It's more a matter of one of them strapping a bomb to his chest and running at them, which tends to be distracting.

I'm pretty sure this basically isn't playing a role. How exactly would it help him? How would he even be able to follow or process it, and use it in a useful manner?

What's more likely, in my opinion, is that he had a pre-planned hidey hole and managed to get to it. And even that isn't THAT likely.
