http://rt.com/news/chechnya-suspect-boston-bombing-110/

They've been identified as brothers from the Russian side of the Caucasus, not far from Chechnya. The surviving bomber is Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. He's only 19.

God fucking damnit. As if Chechnya hasn't suffered enough now every man and his dog in the USA will see that tortured people as a bunch of terrorists.

I have quoted myself so I do not have to repost, now that my message has been hidden. I've read reports that they may have lived in Turkey at one point. Dzhokhar ended up in Cambridge, Mass. on some kind of city scholarship thing.

I've heard conflicting reports from friends of mine (no clear sources) that the guys had Russian-sounding names. They actually look like Chechens. Exactly what they'd be doing blowing stuff up in the USA rather than Moscow... I honestly don't know.

AP is reporting that the survivor has been ID'd as a Massachusets resident of Chechen descent. No further sources yet and this conflicts with the previous names that, to my understanding, came up through people doing their private investigations on the net.

My current hunch is that the motive isn't a specific political cause like Chechen nationalism. More the kind of general nihilism that was behind the Columbine shootings, or perhaps really radical anarchism or something...

Radio scanner just reported a pipe bomb detonated and police calling of EMTs... I wonder how long this will go on?

Radical Islamism is my bet. Kadyrov hasn't done the Chechen people any favours by pushing young men underground with his atrocious, totalitarian policies and turning them to Islamism.

RT would jump on any rumour that the bombers are Chechens, so I wouldn't take that article for granted.

Could be, and you are certainly right about Kadyrov, but the lack of any communique taking responsibility about the bombs makes me somewhat doubtfull at the moment....

Is the origin of the ID RT? Then I wouldn't trust it for a second.

Originates with AP which makes the claim more credible, although the way they've got this ID is very vague.

Quote
The suspects were identified to The Associated Press as coming from the Russian region near Chechnya, which has been plagued by an Islamic insurgency stemming from separatist wars. A law enforcement intelligence bulletin obtained by the AP identified the surviving bomb suspect as Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, a 19-year-old who had been living in Cambridge, just outside Boston, and said he "may be armed and dangerous."

I don't like these "tentative identifications" since they often lead to unrelated and innocent people getting very dangerous attention. Like the brother of the Newtown killer, or that 17-year-old Moroccan in the current case.

The bombers don't necessarily have to be affiliated with Al Queda or any other organization to be able to set-up bombs...  'Lone Wolf' is still a strong possibility, even if they did it for Islam.

Certainly a possibility. It is just my understanding that claiming responsibility is usual among Islamic terrorists, so not leaving or sending a communique to that effect would be unusual even for a lone wolf-type. But unusual certainly isn't impossible.

From the police scanner: "All units use extreme caution approaching individual matching outstanding party." They are very concerned about a suicide vest...

UPDATE: Boston Police Dept. just gave out an Wanted-notice: "Suspect identified as 19 year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev of Canbridge. Suspect considered armed & dangerous".

Just heard on the radio how these guys were trying to evade the police(and how the surviving one still is). Holy shit. Most movies with police chases don't even get that bad.

Just want to add to the previous discussion that while Swedish police doesn't have to use their guns much, when they do they routinely take people down by shots to the legs. So it's not something impossible to expect from your law enforcers if you hold them to any kind of standard.

Still, it depends on the exact situation. We simply aren't there, and while shooting the legs would be preferable, maybe they were covered or something. I can understand using lethal force when someone is shooting at you. If he wanted to avoid being shot, he shouldn't have started a firefight.

Boston police are asking for media not to reveal the positions of the officers as they are doing the house-to-house search. But I'm sitting here, listening on my cellphone to them talking on their radios...

As to the use of lethal force, these are heavily armed suspects, likely wearing suicide vests, who have alreade engaged police in a heavy exchange of fire. While I hope no more lives are lost, in my judgement lethal force can be used if needed, i.e. if he is found and can't be stopped by other means. If an angry drunk stands in his yard with a shotgun and won't follow police orders, then you should try a shot to the leg but this may be a step beyond that.

All the police sharpshooter teams are pretty much mapped out on twitter.
