Considering it, 'terrorism' is pretty good at its namesake.  Puts many people into a reactionary mode and disrupts the shit out of society... No matter how 'we' collectively change because of the act, there is no 100% guarantee it will not happen again.  Sure, you can mitigate the chances... it does not mean you will ever eliminate the chance.  Even so, with time, the public will slack, even the organizations who ends up watching everyone will have to eventually shift their focus.

But each act of 'terrorism' lends momentum toward security over freedom.  Each time 'they' succeed at another act of 'terrorism' over the years/decades... they win.  Because people will say there should have been more security watching for that, in hindsight.

Also, the bomber(s) involved?  It would be really dumb of them to immediately go out and 'blow something else up' or do anything that would get them under scrutiny... if they somehow manage to slip away.  That is if they are not trying to send a message... but are just plain crazy or just waiting for a foreign affiliate declare the motive/claim the blamevictory on some VHS tape from some foreign place the US can't easily reach.
Either way, a 2nd try is going to have an abysmally low chance of succeeding for the next few weeks/months...

From what I heard, the bombs were cased in pressure cookers filled with scrap metal, nails, and ball bearings. They weren't all that advanced, and were probably cobbled together by someone who learned how to on the internet.

So... last weeks...

Could have been faulty timers [causing later than 'optimal' blasts]. Construction of these things was pretty crude.

If not already said[1], the temporal proximity of the two blasts makes me think that they're at least consistent.  So unless consistently vastly delayed (or, of course, accidentally happened close together when only one should have bided its time), I say it points towards an intention towards two at that time, rather than earlier.

Unless it's human error.  e.g. 12/24-hour conversion problem.  Consistently applied to both.

Also, an individual seems unlikely to me. Too many devices for one person.
Those two on the marathon course don't sound excessive.  Do an Italian Job (original UK version, as in how the fat football supporter plants the CCTV-sabotaging gizmos in bins and over walls, etc) and you could probably plant as many devices as you could easily get together.  If on long-enough term timers it could be done in multiple trips in various disparate guises/apparent purposes without making it obvious enough for being easily picked up on CCTV, even after the fact.

Not that I think it's such a well organised (lone-wolf) operation.  (Nor that I myself have thought long and hard about how to do this!)  But I haven't heard too much more than what I've already read here/caught off of the better news sites, and so confirmed supporting/opposing facts are a little scarce.  The aim (or aim the unknown perpetrator(s) wish to convey) is also unknown, and that would somewhat affect the end result.  (e.g., as a long-shot, a "mafia hit", with one bomb, but the other being planted to cover this fact from those not intended to get the actual 'message'... almost certainly preposterous but I bet it has been thought about by minds more devious than mine, and rejected for something even more oblique-yet-effective in purpose.)

Here's my crazy conspiracy theory, but what if the purpose wasn't to hurt any specific people, but to cause a large panic distracting all the police in Boston?  In the aftermath of the explosions and during the panic it would've been fairly easy to commit some other crimes like some kind of heist operation.  I know it sounds kind of crazy but it's the best thing I can think of.
No, not at all. If you want to make a distraction, doing something that will result in half the country and the FBI start trying to find you is the opposite of what you want to do.

If you're doing one of those play/counter-play aware "distraction heists", favoured by Hollywood, then you engineer your distraction to also be not so obviously your MO.  Or, even, heavily hint at an MO of someone else.  Don't use the explosives you already have access to as a mining engineer/whatever, but fudge up an Anarchists Cookbook reader's solution as a false trail.

Its been a few hours now, somebody would have noticed such an event.
Mafia-associated secure-storage place got cleverly burgled? Alert stops/slows standard response, and the Management then downplay the triggering of the silent alarm.  (Sorry, yet another Hollywood answer and again with the Mafia being mentioned without basis, but it demonstrates an extreme possibility, with loads of less severe ones still possible.)

Don't carry bongs around in the next two days in Boston if you're not a moron.

Do you really think that's all it's about?

-Some Crazy Lone Wolf (Can't ever rule that one out.)
Not enough information. Seems to be this by process of elimination.

-Patriot or Militia Movement (Given the day and location, it would be appropriate for them.)
Not really. So far they've done all they have outside the auspice of media attention, targeting only government officials. They have only so far used guns to murder their targets, it would seem unusual for them to change tactics so suddenly.

-al-Qaeda or other Islamist equivalent (The day once again, plus they're openly hostile to America. On the other hand, this wasn't a suicide bombing so it doesn't fit their style.)
A terrorist cell like that would have claimed credit for it by now.

-Domestic crime organization, racially based or otherwise (I'd say this one is unlikely, since most groups like that don't want to do anything that would bring the government down on them. But who knows?)
Could be a black flag terrorist group. About as likely as it being a lone wolf, not enough information so far.

-IRA remnant or American splinter (This one I am only including because my mother is utterly insistent that it is the case, and the related Supreme Court ruling on the very same day. There is also the factor of Boston's Irish population. That said, I consider this one very unlikely but am including it for completion's sake.)
If it were the IRA they would have targeted a financial building and given warning ahead of time, it'd have to be a splinter group if it was them.

Yeah Patriot act has a lot to do with searching people since you have probable cause to suspect there's a fucking bomber on the loose in Boston. Seriously. Stop this horseshit with throwing this into the political spectrum. It makes you people seem pathetic for whining that the police are trying to stop further people from being blown up. Makes legitimate pro-privacy arguments seem silly by connection. Public safety is not a government shell-game, it's only that to a conspiracy theorist.

I'll throw my money at a bet that this bomber started with the same silly paranoid thinking.

SalmonGod, I like you, but...there really are times and places to shortcut certain normal liberties. Like airports. Or the aftermath of these sorts of crises where you keep finding bombs.

I agree with salmongod. While the short term impact of this (random searches, ect.) Is perfectly fine in my opinion, I do believe that this is going to be used as the "We could have stopped this" thing to institute more policing of the internet, wiretaps, and general inethical behavior.
