You are leading a time travel expedition!
« on: April 15, 2013, 11:09:49 am »

Yeah, "leader" and "expedition". That might be a bit of a exaggeration.

You, and one hundred felons got to choose between the death penalty and signing up to the PTT (Prototype Time travel)experiment. It doesn't really matter what you did, maybe you killed a man? Maybe you lead an underground terrorist group trying to undermine the current economical system? The government has surely becomed a lot more oppressive the last 25 years.

But what's important is the future, that's quite ironic since you and your group are going to be sent back to the past. You have been designated leader because your superior skills in the field of _______ and _______, at least that's what they tell you. You have an gnawing feeling that they picked you at random and don't really expect your group to survive.

You will be sent into the Classical ages. Somewhere around the hight of the roman empire. Admittedly they aren't really sure exactly when, or where, the technology is still highly experimental. They are sure that most of you will survive, and that you will create a parallel universe, so their timeline won't be affected by your actions.

You have limited supplies and this is a one trip journey. As the leader you will be appointed with the only rifle and its ammunition to help you control the group, you will also have the key to a safe containing a few handguns, a few handgrenades and spare ammunition.

You have approximately six months of food for hundred people and several books regarding how to speak the several ancient languages you will encounter. You can also suggest some other books on any topic that you want to take with you.

You have to decide what power generator you want, solar, water, wind or any other resource have to power it. Which? (It won’t be very large anyway, but at least you have a way to get electricity.)

You can also try to ask for other materials. But it is not likely you will get permission to take more that you can carry along on the journey. They don’t care if you survive for long. Other than that you have a small personal bag in which you can put some of your belongings. But that's it. Don’t expect them to send more stuff to you after the initial journey...

I propose we get a Nuclear power cell* as power generator. It's efficient, safe, produces lots of power, really hard to destroy and should last at least 30 years. Besides, after the core** runs out, we can remove it and use the generator assembly as a standard thermal power unit.

At least 1 of our skills should be Engineering. We want to impress the ancients and build stuff, not mingle with the natives.

*As in compact nuclear power plant, we don't want a nuclear thermoionic generator.
** We really should go for some kind of pebble reactor thingy. One that controls itself, and can be safely sealed when not in use/ before being dumped.

Oh, and ask a copy of wikipedia. Or a basic guide to timetravel.*

*We will be back.

In any case, the first thing we need to do in the past is step on as many insects and small animals as possible.

Few books about classical physics, electrics(including how logical gates were made first). Also practical knowledge about vaccines and antibiotics.

For skills, well we want engineering.

Oh, and a map of (ancient) ore deposits over the entire world, and how they were mined.
Speaking of which, just take an entire atlas.

And very kindly ask for some kind of water resistant foil. We don't want the books to get wet, that would be dishounorable to the copy of ["Governemental propaganda book"] which we'll certainly take with us*.

The current technology is 20 minute in the future. (With the exception of this super secret time travel thingy, and that the world is ruled by an oppressive government. Mostly so I don't have to make up technology) I am not sure, but I don't think that it is possible to bring a decently safe Nuclear power generator. But I might be wrong!

Designs exists. They are however, not exactly carryable.

I think they range from 5 to 20 tonnes, and produce enough power for a small town.

Wikipedia

A thermoionic reactor would be possible though. Those are generally quite small, and readily used in spacecraft. Problem is that they emit lower power, and I doubt we'd be able to salvage anything from them when they run out.

Hm. I could give you the option to get a prototype micro nuclear reactor. It will produce much more electricity than the other alternatives. But there is a higher risk of critical failure, easy to sabotage and will require most work to get up and keep running.

But that's the opposite of what a pocket nuclear reactor tries to do.

Ie, a faintly glowing powerproducing rather hot box.

That is probably true, but remember that those are 10 years or so into the future, and that they don't want to spend to much assets on you. You are not the first group sent back into time, most of them have died horribly. Time travel is dangerous buisness.
