Kitten rot on body parts you didn't even know you had!
« on: April 14, 2013, 11:50:44 pm »

I recently had a giant cicada composed of vomit find a hole in my cavern defenses and lay down a layer of frozen kitten rot extract.

When I saw one of my marksdwarves cancel a job to rest an injury, I was surprised, as I am overstocked on socks and shoes - and anyway, as a marksdwarf, he should be wearing boots. I zoomed to him, and sure enough, he's numb. I checked his inventory and sure enough, he's only wearing one boot, on his right foot - Dwarves! What are they good for, am I right?

I decided to keep an eye on him out of curiosity. Checking in on the progression of the necrosis every few seconds - you know how it is.

And then I noticed something.

This dwarf lost his left leg - the leg that is currently rotting - thirteen years ago. He was only wearing one shoe because it's been over a decade since he had more than one foot. Fath Livingrooms the Copper Rivers of Love is about to die of kitten rot of the phantom limb.

...I'm not sure whether this bug is terrible or fantastic.

It looks like the game removed only the upper leg, leaving the foot attached to the dwarf... so he was unable to wear a shoe because his leg is marked as gone, but his foot isn't marked as gone, so it contracts kitten rot.

That's dwarves for you.

That's some impressive dwarven medical science: he lost his upper leg but ONLY his upper leg. I assume the doctors stapled the rest of it to his other leg or something.

So he got one complete leg and one foot (plus bits of lower leg) with kitty rot attached to his hip? Sounds like dwarven medicine to me ???
Please do file a bug report (with savegame if possible). I heard about phantom pain in missing limbs, but this seems unintended.

I have heard of a lower leg (actually both lower legs) being removed without the feet being lost.

I will run the experiment to completion anyway, however. Even if the only reason why there is a punctured equilibrium in the fortress is because I have been brutally butchering babies
EDIT: I just remembered that dwarves can't equip halberds. That might explain why the squads that use them always die.

*cough* In case somebody doesn't know what the Mantis is, it's Dwarf Fortress' bug tracking system. They are closely monitored at all times.

That is just so Dwarf Fortressy. If you posted this out of context somewhere other than Bay 12 Forums, there could only be two reactions: most people would think, "Say whaaaaattt????"  The other few would think, "Oh, they must be talking about Dwarf Fortress."

Anyway, I also have an image of a dwarf going around with his left foot stapled to his body somewhere. That's just not a pleasant image..

No need to open a new report on mantis, since it's already been reported: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=4904
It could be worthwile to add the information to that report, esp. that new contaminants can be acquired on missing bodyparts, and that possibly the loss of a 'parent' limb doesn't properly remove 'filial' limbs (i.e. upper leg/upper arm is lost but the contaminant code fails to remove lower leg/arm and foot/hand as possible location for contaminants).

If you have okay wrestling, you can stab someone in the lower body, making their guts pop out. If you then wrestle and pinch the guts, you can sever them. By then, the guy's probably unconscious. If he's not, strangle him until he is and cave in his skull with the guts.

No, really.

It's a nickname for syndromes that cause necrosis.

If I had to guess, it's due to the fact that players use kittens to map out infected areas. This would be due to the hardcoded behaviour of cats where they try to visit every location at least once.

Not just syndromes that cause necrosis - syndromes that cause necrosis on skin contact.

When creatures with neither shoes nor wings walk on a tile coated with the syndrome-causing substance, they contract the syndrome. Since cats need to be free-roaming/not pastured in order to combat vermin, the syndrome ends up affecting mostly cats. :)
