Family History/Lore/Whatnot
« on: April 12, 2013, 11:35:05 am »

So, there's a recurring set of themes that seem to consistently derail threads. One of these derailers is family history. Therefore, I propose that all discussion of family history/ancestry/genealogy be moved to this thread.

I don't, either, but we have a couple of amateur genealogists on here, and some people have extensive knowledge of their family history, which is always fun to read.

I know I'm descended from a bunch of Swedes, a bunch of Germans, and a single Ashkenazim women who survived Auschwitz. That's about all I know.

My ancestry is unknown before the 1500s save this one minor English lord on my father's maternal side a few generations back that takes me all the way back to Charlemagne, which of course means that it continues to Saint Arnulf of Metz, then from his grandmother, whose father was the the Roman Prefect of Gaul, Ferreolus Tonantius, to his father of the same name, to his mother, to a Consul of the Roman Empire, Flavius Afranius Syagrius, and then it peters out. Of course, being descended from English nobility means that my family tree has me descended from Joseph of Arimathea, but I doubt the legitimacy of that one. Then again, it could all be wrong and someone descended from the same guy was making crap up. I'll have to find the name of that lord again, but I remember when I checked him out he was legit. Then again, past Arnulf of Metz every historian pretty much just guesses on his lineage.

Apparently I'm a direct descendant of the Irish royalty.

Get me wenches!

One of my granduncles was in the IRA, though that's not really that unusual in Ireland.

My mother's side is pretty much always circling near Pomerania and Gdańsk (their family name is Zittermann) down to early 19th century...

My father's side goes further east the further we go back in the past, and can't get back past an early 19th century minor landowner in Ukraine because lack of documents.

Edward III (Awesome!), and Daniel Boone by marriage.

Scottish, English, German (distant), Cherokee (few) ancestors. Don't really know much more than that, though that's more from laziness than anything else, because a relative of mine has compiled a pretty thoroughly researched family history.

Oh man, last I checked I have the following:

1/4 Dutch: Grandmother who came over after the war.
Part German (Pennsylvania Dutch): They were United Empire Loyalists during the revolution and have worked their way north ever since arriving in New York.
Part Ukrainian: Where my last name comes from, oddly enough. Family lore has it that two brother came to America around 1900, then got tired one day and walked across the border to Canada.
The rest is British of some description: Scottish and English.

http://www.elfengaard.dk/fam/fam00123.htm

Website is a bit weird and hard to navigate, and my grandmother said she(The website creator.) made some mistakes. It's some woman I'm related to a bit further out who has made that website, and funnily my whole family is in there on my mothers side. Don't care much about my father side, he's an idiot at his best and haven't seen him for years upon years.

I only really consider my family through my mother and then my grandmother, since this is where my name and identity comes from. I'm a Dinesen, not a Sandberg and most definitely not a Kevings. My mothers father was a fucking psychopath at best.
