Kel grins at the Kickikithik's response, nodding. "That's fine, really! I understand different places and stuff." Of course, she gets even MORE excited when studying enchantment was made possible, tail swishing happily. "Ooh, that means that I can study with you, right?"

Turn 2: Back Together


Oh right. Also I decided to research an Enchantment spell ragnarok.

"Master Vadhe, I believe it would be a good idea to research a spell to make something more resistant to fire."

Research Imbue Fire Resistance: a spell that makes the target object more difficult to set alight and/or burn more slowly.
Vadhe pauses a moment in quiet contemplation.

"If you truly believe your talents lie in this direction, then as you wish. I bid you caution, however. The sphere we are about to attempt contains... unruly regions. Dangerous, destructive forces and impulses.

You would do well to remain on the warming, dispassionate side of Fire, if indeed it is Fire at all that you seek."


[3] You make modest progress on the spell. (+1 Spell)

Also, I love how Kel didn't quite get it the first week, and then just kicked magic's ass after that XDD))

The small mermaid was ecstatic by the time their first lessons were finished, the tip of her tail bobbing and swishing excitedly back and forth in happiness as it had so many times when she'd made breakthroughs in her magic, whether they were through the indirect aid of another or her own ingenuity. She comes to the area where they were to meet early, also a normal thing for her, always excited for the next bit of training they'd receive. Of course, hearing that they were to be picking their own areas of study excited her greatly, though the great number of choices before them worries her a bit. Should she practice her Evocation more? perhaps increase her skill with one of the spells she knew, or perfect her Life Magic? She thinks for a time, actually taking quite some time to think about it... she wanted to do so many things she'd already learned some of...

Eventually, however, she settles on something. On one thing that she'd work on for the foreseeable future... at least until she knew something of the school that had caught her fancy for now. She approaches their teacher, her eyes wide, looking at him, almost pleading as she asks him her question. "Um... Master? You said that if we wanted, you'd help us research Enchantment magic, right? Well... I think I'd like to learn more about that..."


Kelnoia approaches their master and asks for schooling in Enchantment magics if he has the time for it within his schedule.
Vadhe invites you to study the same enchantment as Sark, though he gives you the same words of warning regarding its sphere.

[2] Well... your main goal was to learn more enchanting, and that you do. (+1 Enchanting)


"A spell combining life and evocation, that doesn't involve healing or purging disease. Restore life to the dead? Tempting, but I wouldn't know where to begin. Destroying undead? Would that even work without a test subject and with no understanding of the subject? Can magic even rebirth undead? (Possible. Come back to that later.) Convert life energy to sustained light? Likely horribly inefficient. Just light a torch instead. It would be best to try something like what we already know ..."

"It would be wise for our first independent project to be a useful spell, (or one that will be when we have abundant mana,) that is similar to one Master Vadhe helped us learn. I propose a spell to restore endurance."

With Kelnoia studying enchantment with Sark and Davven faffing about, the group appears to be the only thing you can study with anyway. You hear the same warning as all Vadhe's students.

Self directed reasearch? Finally. Maybe I can get some real progress done. I almost have the hang of this Healing spell, I'd better get these idiots into line.

Study that healing spell.
You attempt to refine your healing spell further, and fail miserably. Without Vadhe to assist you, you just don't know where to progress from here. It seems he wasn't kidding about needing another student to assist with your paltry knowledge of evocation and life magics.

[5] That fiasco over with, you do the only thing you can, which is study with Master Vadhe and Sark. You do surprisingly well, considering how lost you were on your own. (+2 Spell, +1 Fire)


Zuth's journal; Week five.

The study if magic is going fine. My instinct to bribe my way into a apprentice position was proven right, once again. While I had to sell of most of my holdings, I am sure this will gain me even more power in the future. At this time, Enchantment does seem like the most interesting circle, that goes well with my future plans. But all knowledge does gets me even closer to my goal.

I haven't had the time to converse with the other apprentices at this date, but most of them seems willing to cooperate. I will focus on magic study for a few weeks before rebuilding my political networks.

NOTE I: Kelnoia seems interested in the art of enchantment as well.  A closer cooperation with her might be beneficial.
NOTE II: Davven does have noble blood running through his ways. Will investigate his current status in and outside of the city.





After hearing his masters orders Zuth finally raises his firm, yet calm voice.
–I am to interested in the study of Enchantments. However, The spell proposed by Wilson is an intriguing spell. One that might improve the efficiency of all the students in this room. If there is no opportunity to study enchantment, I will gladly assist you in any way I can.

If the master offers to teach enchantment, Zuth will do that, otherwise he votes for Refreshing Nap, but will do whatever the majority of the students do.
 

[5] Zuth gets the same warning about Fire magic as everyone, then proceeds to make good progress in it. (+2 Spell, +1 Fire)


Davven had been at the monastery for weeks now, but his fellow pupils still made him uncomfortable. His village was never home to such a gaggle of different races, and the few that were there served as servants or menial labourers. Now he was surrounded by them. It didn't help that his master was a Gnoll. Had the offer to unlock the secrets of magic not been so tempting, he would have refused him outright. Granted, Vadhe seemed a different sort and had a certain charisma, but Davven couldn't help but be tense around him.

Perhaps it was this uneasiness that was causing him to struggle where others had flourished. While the basic concept of evocation seemed to come naturally to the young man, the actual process of casting life spells was a harder concept. He was pleased that the previous week had seem a good deal of progress, he would have to continue working diligently. How could he ever think about returning life to those who had lost it, if he could not restore the living to a state of good health? Hopefully some quiet study and practise would do him some good.


Practice life circles spells. Specifically basic healing.
You attempt to refine your healing spells, but find that you don't know how. You understand the premise of evoking the effect, but you don't know where to get the effect from. It seems Master Vadhe wasn't kidding about needing to work together with the other students.

[3] That fiasco over with, you study along with everyone else. You make some progress in the spell, but nothing else.


Vadhe: [6] Despite his warnings, Vadhe himself is apparently quite familiar with Fire Magic (and enchantment), and more than willing to foster this understanding in everyone else. (+2 Spell, +1 Enchantment, +1 Fire for all)

If Vadhe's still teaching, continue studying under him. If not, then study Refreshing Nap or Basic Healing, in that order of preference.

Kel seems rather disappointed with her own lack of progress, pouting a little, but at least she got something out of that. Of course, she didn't master Enchanting even in the most rudimentary sense, but she had something going for her. The next (day?), she approaches the group as before, still very much interested in getting her Enchanting or healing skills up to a decent amount. This time, however, she has more specific goals in mind.

"Hmm... Since we focused on water yesterday, maybe we can try another type of enchanting today, if anyone's interested... Maybe something that we could use for people in the city... maybe something to keep metal from rusting?"

Study Enchantment if someone wishes to do so, whether it is another student or the Master. If they are amicable, study a spell to prevent corrosion, then any other enchantment spell if available, and then Life magic if enchantment is entirely out of the question.

: "Curious one, aren't you? I'm not entirely comfortable telling you so much about my people, but I will share a few things. We do not give names lightly. Only those who perform great duties or works are given a name, so that they may be remembered. Likely any other Kik'kithik you meet will be a nameless drone serving it's master. One other thing is that we are all born dumb. 'As a sack of hammers' the idiom goes, I beleive? More literal than most. It takes many years to gain any intelligence beyond mere beasts, and are as such used as 'hammers'. Simple tools for simple jobs, such as farming. The dumb are called the Nek'var, the learned Shen'var. 95 percent of an egg group will likely die before reaching this point, but they are numerous enough that the loss is no great deal."

ooc: Sorry if my action was stupid/invalid, guess I still don't quite understand what is the best course of action to improve my character! Is offering to help teach Evocation okay since I already have 1 in it? Or should I just be researching with the others?

Davven couldn't help but feel discouraged, while others were spending their time researching new techniques and spells, he was floundering about trying to grasp things he didn't fully understand in the first place. Perhaps this was a sign from the heavens that Davven must work together with his fellow students and put prejudices aside, at least for now. Perhaps helping the others with the evocation techniques he had learned might lead to a reciprocated favour in the future.

Last week progressed fine. I had a chance to improve my enchanting a bit. There is not much more to write. I will keep on studying magic for a while. Improving my enchantment skill until in can be used in a more practical way. I don't like how our master seems to hide some of his knowledge of magic, but I won't raise my concerns for now. 




"I suggest that we keep on studying the art of enchantment, focusing to teach the Source of that skill. When some of us are proficient enough to study without your guidance, we can branch out. If that is not possible, we should continue to study the resist fire. Think of the possibilities! We could create buildings resistant to fire. The people of Landsend donīt need to fear a city fire burning down their homes!"

Zuth will study with the teacher, preferably Enchantment.

((This definitely seems considerably different from what I had planned. You could always just branch out into a custom race rather than the current bugfolk, of course.))

((You can try to teach evocation, but it'd probably be a lot less efficient than working together with someone else who already has a Sphere.))

Sark was happier with his progress last week, as he seemed to be a better fit for spells of the Fire Sphere. Since his skills were insufficient to perform research effectively by himself, he decided to try and study with Master Vadhe, but he also wanted to know more about mana and how it connected to spellcasting.

Study with Vadhe. If this is not possible, attempt to study the Basic Fire Resist spell. In either case, attempt to sense what happens to the mana when a spell is cast.

Faced with the same issues as with the Life Sphere, Vadhe once again shifts research to a different spell within the same area. This time it's Warming Glow, a morale-boosting enchantment.

Vadhe seems a bit confused and then contemplative at your suggestion to teach the Source of a Method.

"I fear several of you are nearing the limits of Resist Fire. I would not want to waste their time with a spell they cannot yet cast.

Your thinking is noble, however. Well done."

In fact, Enchantment in general finally clicks for you. You think you could do it on your own, if only you had a Sphere to power it.

Vadhe seems pleased that you have finally found your calling, or at least something you don't seem unattuned to.

Your attempts at studying mana prove fruitless, however. You really can't tell what's happening to it, at least not by paying attention while trying to research a fire enchantment under Vadhe's guidance.


Vadhe: [2] Vadhe's instruction is largely technical, concerning weaving the spell into an enchantment more than any other topic. (+1 Enchantment for all)

Fortunately for Wallace, that seems to be exactly what he needed. He manages to unlock the secrets of Enchantment fully, allowing him to research and cast spells entirely of his own volition. He is, in many ways, the first since Vadhe to become a true Wizard.



Vadhe holds a minor celebration for this event. Being rather solemn and thoughtful, it's more of a dignified and ceremonial feast than anything else, but it's certainly the closest to "fun" you've seen Vadhe organize.

Also breaking with the usual somewhat, Vadhe grants Wallace a special gift for the occasion- a set of fine silk robes, brown with gold trim and an elaborate tree-like symbol on the chest. While still not exactly ostentatious by the standards of a city leader, it's nonetheless far fancier than Vadhe's own clothing.

"These robes mark you as a true apprentice, Wallace Nathanael Wilson. Though I would caution you against hubris, you should nonetheless feel pride at your accomplishments, and go forth to aid others as best you feel able. The symbol represents the sphere of Life as I have perceived it, as well as... certain spiritual overtones.

Finally, I would grant you a boon for this momentous occasion. Ask what you will, and I will endeavor to provide it.


As for the rest of you, I look forward to the days when you too master magic enough to stand on your own with it."

Of course, Kelnoia wants to learn more, now. Her curiosity had been inflamed by the new knowledge she'd gained... and she was driven to continue practicing, wanting to catch up to the one who was in front of her... she knew what she'd practice next.

She approaches the Master again, intending to ask him about a particular spell she'd been thinking of for a while.

"Master? I was wondering if I could speak to you for a moment... Do you think that you might be able to teach me something like... something to help make life flourish in areas that it's weak? To help crops grow and such?"

He might recognize the reason for this... Kelnoia's home had been stricken by a famine some time before she'd come here, which had been the reason for her being displaced in the first place, though it hadn't dampened her happy-go-lucky attitude much. Honestly, it was anyone's guess why it didn't.

Study Growth, a spell to aid in the growth and prosperity of plants and other such things.

Hey IronyOwl, I think I should have 4/5 Enchantment (since I had 2/5 Enchantment last turn). Anyhow, time for more IC information gathering.

Sark decided to approach Vadhe a day or two after the celebration to expand his knowledge about the types of magic that they had not encountered yet.
"Master Vadhe, I am curious as to what other Spheres of magic you know of."
Once again, study with Vadhe or try to practice a Fire spell if this is not possible.

"I believe I could. I would prefer, however, if you would discover such wonders on your own, at least for the most part. I do not yet feel comfortable leaving Sark on his own, and I should hope that by the time I do, you will be ready to work amongst yourselves, if not entirely on your own."
