how about bone types?
« on: April 11, 2013, 05:22:24 pm »

How about different types of bones like...

Light bones (birds and other flying things).
Normal bones (humans, wolves, bears... basically most mammals and lizzards).
Heavy (not sure what could have those... ^^').

I think it could make a good feature.

Light bones could be used for things like arrows and bolts.
Normal bones could be used for armor or crafts.
Heavy could be used for weapons or ballista ammo.

It does seem a bit incongruous that blood types are tracked but not bone types.

You think dwarven bones would be slightly denser than normal bones?
Also i think a few mythical bone types might spice things up a bit.
Demon bones
Titan Bones
Dragon Bones.

We already have different types of bones for each creature.

We already have different types of bones for each creature.

If I'm not mistaken, which is very possible the bones now have different names, but they all have the same parameters (weight, hardness, size, ETC.)

That isn't very realistic fun to play around with if you ask me.

I agree.
If anything, different bone densities should impact how well they would be suited for making bolts.
For obvious reasons sparrow bone bolts would be lighter (and thus less dangerous) than dragon bone bolts.

I think that's possible that different bone types are denser or less dense than others.

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

Also, it would make them more viable as makeshift weaponry - you know, bones can be lethal if they're heavy/dense enough.
Probably not as lethal as steel, but could do for adventurers/crude civs/fun forts.

Isn't that because rhinos have tougher skin than humans?

It's perfectly possible to do it now, just define another material and edit the relevant creature files. If you really want it, you might want to prepare the creature files so Toady just has to approve them. It will go faster that way.

I believe dragon bones are already fireproof, inheriting the [FIRE_IMMUNE] tag from their former... owners? Selves?

Unfortunately, due to the fact that you can't make non-artifact buildings/constructions/whatever out of bone, and that bug that renders non-metal items magma-unsafe even when they're made out of magma-safe materials, there's no way to use this property...

They are, in exactly the same way. Unless you mean ichor vs. blood vs. goo, in which case I'd point out that differing bone types would probably require dwarves to be able to determine what bones are best to use, so they don't make robin bone weapons or hydra bone figurines or whatever, unless you wanted them to for some reason.

Basically, the bigger problem is that any bone is useful for anything. Try turning some cat bones into a figurine or a helm, would you. This kind of thing can wait until bones are handled properly, especially since most major mods already do this to some extent.
