After thoroughly searching the cot, you conclude that it is neither trapped nor very comfortable. Hopefully you didn't pick up any parasites.

What do?

Well there doesn't seem to be much left here. Take the book, and adventure with our companion, the left hand wall!

You slip the note back into place, stuffing the book into a pocket, before once again following a fine old tradition. You backtrack and take the next-leftmost corridor, passing by a room on the right. You note that there are a few things that are neither crumbling stone nor splintered furniture deeper within it before continuing around several turns. A section of the wall has collapsed, narrowing the passageway, but you edge past it without too much trouble, entering the small room just around the next corner. You stop dead in your tracks, staring at the occupant of the room. It resembles a gazelle, if gazelle were feathered and had inch-long fangs. It turns from the corpse it was grazing on and stares at you, its open mouth almost resembling a smile.

Perhaps we could tame it with food? We have a severed arm here.

Taking the logical first step, you whip the severed arm out of your pocket and wave it enticingly at the carnizelle. It stares at you for a moment, glances at the corpse on the floor, then the arm, and then back at you. The thought process is palpable. 'Hours-to-days-old corpse on floor. Hours-to-days-old arm. Fresh meat.'

It pounces, knocking the arm out of your grasp, forcing you back into the corridor. It isn't the largest of beasts, but you aren't exactly a beefcake, either; you're knocked off-balance and stumble on some loose stone, falling against the wall. The speed of your fall snuffs out the flame of your candle, and this hallway is bereft of torches.

You hear the carnizelle snarl somewhere to your front left.

Graft its prana!
You don't know what prana is, or how one would go about grafting it.

Breath fire at the sound?

Flail wildly until you find something to grab, then yank it as hard as you can.

Hit it in the prana.
If we can't find that, hit it in the face/head. Or legs.

You attack the darkness swing wildly in the direction of the growl. A moment later the carnizelle clamps down on your right arm, tearing through the robe and sinking into your flesh. Panicking, you grab in its general direction, finding purchase on a narrow band of leather fastened around its neck. You can feel the oily feathers rubbing against your left hand as you pull and lift with all your strength, tearing your right arm further. For a moment you are caressed by a slight breeze as you flip the light-boned predator over your shoulder, smashing it against the wall with a nasty crunching sound. It releases its grip on your arm as it slides down the wall, wedging itself between your back and the unfinished stone. You can feel it breathing, though apart from that it isn't moving.

Feeling around, it appears that the candle in your candlestick has survived the tussle, perhaps because there's less than half an inch of it left above the lip of the hole. A trickle of blood runs down your right arm; apparently the carnizelle didn't hit any major blood vessels, but it still feels terrible..

Mercy is for the weak. You dig a rock out of your pocket, search around for the carnizelle's head, and start bashing. The first blow knocks it out of its stupor, but you strike it again with both the rock and your candlestick. With a wet crunch you feel its skull shatter and relax, dropping the rock and wiping some of the blood off of your hands with the hem of your robe. You must look absolutely marvelous right now.
