It is indeed, I live in a very remote part of it as well (the nearest town is 15 miles away or so) so it sometimes feels like you have a whole glen to yourself. The ski slopes are close by too, not that I indulge in such thrill-seeking. It's a real bugger when you need to go shopping though.

I wouldn't have said that Lothian was so crappy personally but I have not experienced much of that realm. Though I am practically an East-Coaster myself I still remain in orbit around Glasgow.

I found out today that my genetic markers identify me as a Pretani person, specifically R1B S145. Until now there was some uncertainty, now there is little doubt. Furthermore the people I have most in common with are people from Munster in Southern Ireland and Wales. My particular subgroup of S145 still hasn't been identified yet, which annoys me, but it is most likely Strathclyde Briton as they are the last subgroup on the list to be identified.

That basically makes me a Glaswegian aborigine.

If that if one of your problems with NZ, I'm afraid you won't find any respite in Sweden. The government here are thoroughly neo-liberal and is giving away millions upon millions in tax money handouts to private companies. The current government is even so obsessed with the idea that "private organisation is always and inherently and automatically better than state-run" that we now have private business doing what the state used to provide (sometimes even alongside the state organisation) with no income beyond tax money, often despite being proved to be inefficient or even incapable and certainly not cheaper than the public alternative. It's completely redundant and utterly ridiculous.
