It's definitely not what "most" people do. Most people continue leveling right past SL150 and don't care about Soul Memory. Check the player level distribution: http://farfire.darksoulsii.com/pc/players/index.html Yes, there is a bump on the curve at 150, but it's microscopically small. The SL150 meta that was widespread in Dark Souls 1 does not really exist in 2 in any meaningful sense.

Eh, I just started a new game after I'd lost too many souls on my first. Only lost about 200K on this one so far I think.

If you're into the whole Soul Grinding thing, that's not too difficult once you get to the Giant Lord.  Dude's pretty easy.  Hexes apparently were nerfed and I haven't been on since before that, so I don't know exactly how fast you can kill him anymore, Sunlight spear should be able to make mincemeat of him still.

In unrelated news, I don't know if you guys have seen this wallpaper yet so I thought I'd share it with you.  It probably goes better in the Dark Souls 1 thread, but I think most of you would appreciate it as well.

Yeah, probably, but... look at it! It's gorgeous! Damn I wish games actually looked like that! There's a lot of pixel art retro games lately but their artwork is nowhere near this level of quality.

Though I kinda want to try a hex build for PVE.

Now there's a challenge build. You must always have slotted at least one pyromancy, one sorcery, one miracle, and one hex. And the equipment to cast them.

There was a patch that came out today, that might be what you are talking about.  Now (AFAIK, I haven't played the new patch yet) healing items are restricted during PvP.
Also some other stuff.

Given that the game pops up a giant dialog box that says "checking DLC..." every time it starts, did anyone actually believe that?

They said there'd be no DLC, but a lot of Players asked for it. Me included, because the DLC for the first one was fantastic.

They nerfed Lighting Bolt Miracles in the patch, really hard. Some Damage nerfs and the casts were now cut down to like a third of what they were before. I'm pretty pissed since I had prepared a Paladin to tackle the DLC, and without Lightning half my build is basically useless.

Either gonna have to start a new Character or jump to another build with a Soul Vessel.
