So, WHERE can summoning occur, and under what circumstances?  How does going human work in regards to being summoned or able to summon?  The only human-making item so far has been 'human effigy' which makes you human, but makes you LESS likely to be able to cooperate.  So what gives?  What do?

I think the less likely to be able to cooperate is if you burn the effigy instead of using it, which also makes you less likely to be invaded. Bad wording in the description.

As for summoning, I can't answer since my covenant apparently prevents me from summoning or placing my sign. In the beta you had to be full human to summon, that's all I know.

You have to be human to summon, you can always be invaded, Covenant of Champions can't summon at all. If you kill the boss of an area you can't summon within it, and this can cut off summoning on the near side of a branching path.

You can just leave if that's a problem, it's what I did. It's a shame, because aside from almost completely cutting you off from online the Covenant of Champions is just what I was looking for. Oh well, maybe I can find enough Bonfire Aesthetics to replicate the difficulty jump.

I can see why it prevents you from summoning, but why prevent you from being summoned as well? Sure it heals you, but so does getting your messages rated and that's not disabled.

You earn souls from being summoned, right? It is the Hard-Mode Covenent, and being able to grind by helping people in other worlds kinda misses the point.

At least, that is my guess.

Well, live and learn.  I'll be rolling up a new character tomorrow on PS3.  I somehow forgot even the most BASIC of Dark Souls experiences - clerics get bonus healing.

I hate Xbox live. I feel like I'm hitting a brick wall and I can't continue without some outside help, but I lack to money for gold.
Also has anyone noticed that the NPC summons are really useless?

I'm curious in the interviews before release as a teaser it was stated you could join a covenant to be a summon for the mirror knight boss, is this still a thing because I have checked the wiki and there is no mention of this. Or am I getting things mixed up ?.

that sounds like that one gimmicky boss from demon souls. to my knowledge no, there is no covenant that does that. the covenants are:
new players club; new player helpers; final destination no items hardmode; almost darkwraith; dragon people; rat bastard; king of the hill keeper; sunbros2.0; and bonus dungeoneers. looking at it none of them would link to that boss.

So this extinction thing sounds kind of sad. Means I won't be able goof off in areas for long without restarting the whole game.

it takes a -while- for that to happen tho. my only concern is not getting one set of armor that only drops off of one enemy type. so im scared for that. and by my count i think theres only like 5 mimics in the game. give every chest a good smack and for the love of god dont stand behind it because it will glitch you in front of it

but it seems to me like shields have just been made much less useful

Quite the opposite my good sir. From what I am told shields are still king relative to dual wielding.

Just wait until you get some stamina and 100% damage reduction.

What does make dual wielding more possible mind you is that Boss HP doesn't increase all that much as the game goes on. In fact some bosses even have low HP. So it isn't as much of a war of attrition.
