Going Crazy, would love a new release soon....
« on: April 10, 2013, 01:13:24 am »

I know that Toady has his own scheduled and I respect that, that doesn't mean that it isn't eating me up inside to play with the new release. Every day new features are being added, and I think that's wonderful. More so, its now the time to see the finalization of the new additions. However, how will I know I like those features if I can never play them? :( As a gamer, it is agonizing. Its been 9 months since the last release, and I disregarded Dwarf Fortress so I could forget the game to come back to a release later on. Months went by, and upon returning no release. I am now at a point where I have to play, and can no longer avoid playing it (one fair I have is over playing the game and getting tired of it).

Ive been holding out saying anything about really wanting a new release on the forums for months, and I simply could not hold my mouth (fingers) shut anymore.

I hope a release comes soon.

I was thinking more along the lines of this legendary champion, all clad in dented and dinged up steel plate, his blood-drenched axe slung over his back, a notch in the handle for every enemy that saw the swing of that blade as the last sight they ever saw, a battered shield strapped over his arm... and a fluffy, pink stuffed hippo hidden discretely in his breastplate.

Right now I'm putting estimates of the release sometime in late May - early June at the soonest. If we are extremely lucky we might get an end of April release, but I doubt it. A general estimate is that when Toady moves on to just bug fixing (instead of adding/tweaking new features) you usually have about 2/3rds - 1 month left before the release. Another useful indicator is the Hydra test (which Toady mentioned making strides towards a few days ago) which usually occurs near the end of the add/tweak new features portion of development.

And think of it this way, the gap is still most likely going to be shorter then the 1.5 year gap between 40d and DF2010. :P

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

My estimate is mid June, at the latest, based largely on Toady's own projection of being done last month. That's consistent with i2amroy's estimate, which gives me confidence that it's right.

You also have to consider whether or not Toady decides to add something else. That is the unknown factor that bothers me.

What's wrong with the current release? It's pretty bug free (compared to some past versions) and already has more possibilities than one person can use in a lifetime. Have you built a poultry based fortress in a tower made of soap near a terrifying ocean yet? No? Well, get onto it while you wait for the new version ;)

Honestly, I'd like an update too, but I'm sure Toady is working as hard as he can to make it possible right now. And I also prefer a reasonably functional version (remember v27, the first version with z-levels? That was !!interesting!!) to one that's loaded with new features but basically unplayable until all the bugfixes are finished a few weeks afterwards.

there are still some big bugs in the game. when you cancel a military order, the soldiers revert to civilians for a brief period.

also, Hospital stock way more than they should.

I too would love to fiddle with all the new features. Patience is a real virtue, though. Toady always delivers. It's gonna be so much fun to leap across rivers instead of watching my companions drown (I presume that if you jump across they won't try to path through the river like you do if you swim in.)

For me, the most exciting thing about the new release is multi-tile trees... and the new climbing mechanics.  The world is going to be so different.
