Games to which you can read books
« on: April 01, 2013, 11:06:04 am »

Good day gentleman,

just yesterday, I've found one game and fell in love with it; it is not because of the graphic, immersion or gameplay, but merely because i can relax and read a book while playing it. The game is called The Aurora Wager and its a part of the 7DRL contest. In this game, you are just traveling in a balloon and occasionally intervening to change altitude in order to catch more auspicious winds or trying to land on islands to scout for fuel.
Do you happen to know similar games which don't require your full attention and to which you can just read, listen to podcast or relax?

Thanks.

Eve Online when Mining... or going from place to place... or playing Eve in general.

That looks like a really cool game, but why was it entered into the 7DRL challenge? It's clearly not a roguelike at all!

Meh, waiting till you storage is full is just... ...waiting. This accounts also for games like wurm or tick based online games. ...you're just waiting. I think there is a very small but significant difference.

No idea, probably something along the lines of randomly generated world, and the fact that you can land and search for new equipment too.

Older versions of SimCity (2000 or 3000) on slower settings?

Obligatory mention of Progress Quest.

Aside from entering your character's name/race/class, it requires no input from you.

Silent Hunter III
X3: Terran Conflict (and other games in the X-series)

Play those without time-compression and you'll be able to read quite a bit. ;)

For X3 you'll also get less failures in production lines and other glitches that come about with time compression.

X3 definitely, especially as you can take an action battle, and then spend two hours traveling to another system without time warp.  So you can get your slow progress and your space fighter in one game.  Not to mention the game is just overall amazing.

...without time-compression...

Time warp means that the game includes parts that you could as well skip between the fun parts.
It's like you are expected to skip them instead to wait them out, but that's not what i meant.
I'm searching for a game where the gameplay itself is serene and undemanding yet not empty. Hard to describe.  :-\
Thanks anyway, guys.

Just about any turn based strategy game such as Panzer general or Fantasy General.

The fact that you can zone out and keep reading and nothing happens to your turns is a plus.

dang I like fantasy general.

This might be captain obvious of me, but: dwarf fortress? I used to study for general exams with a 10 year old stable fort running in the background, looking up only to unpause or deal with a mood or a siege.
