I like dropbox for that, Even if your not online it will update itself as soon as you connect to the internet. (Don't make any changes if you log onto a different computer first)

I think the most portable thing you could have of DF, is either a usb. Or setting up your own server with all your DF stuff on it, Ect.. all the versions, mods, tools and such. Have it running 24/7, And to set it up to check if the files need to update when you reconnect if you ever play off line. Which would work really well for succession games. I would set that all up for people if I had a server box and another computer.
