Inter creatures into burial receptacles
« on: March 31, 2013, 08:40:13 am »

Simple suggestion, allow the interring of creatures into burial receptacles, much in the same manner as cages.

Because sometimes you just have to bury your Dwarves and they won't stay dead. And if they can be caged, can't they be buried? It'd do wonders for Mummies too.

I don't quite understand the purpose of this suggestion.

If it's to slay an undead dwarf that rises from the dead using an animal buried with it there's a few problems.
First of all animals will likely perish if they were buried, making them undead and allied with other undead creatures. If animals do survive the process and don't need to feed it's still a lot easier to just make a couple weapon traps outside the coffin or to just fully seal the dwarf with walls.

If it's to stop an animal from raising after dying in an evil biome by burying them there's generally ways around that. Having refuse pits surrounded by walls or traps will stop anything from causing real trouble. Pets can also be buried in coffins.

If it's to allow flavour like an Egyptian society that allows the burial of animals then that would have to wait until a religious/cultural arc. Current Dwarven society doesn't seem to have the belief that property is needed to be buried with the dead.

I think it's to basically lock the dead in their graves. Sounds interesting. I'm all for it as long as I can inter the living as well.

It's to bury the entire Dwarf.

There's very distinct feels to dumping your Dwarves' corpses down refuse chutes and ceremonially interring their living corpses, carefully preserved into coffins and sarcophagi.

It really only seems to be a problem in an evil biome where the dead reanimate. If you choose to live in an evil region then indecent burial and "gore-shoots" become a matter of survival.

Ideally there should be a survivalist element where Drawven ethics are more flexible in certain environments. It seems strange to me that a community living in an area where the dead rise from their graves would want to bury their dead rather than cremating the bodies.
I suppose there's the idea that if the coffin was filled with an undead beastly that a likely grave robber would be quite surprised. Although it still seems strange a society would risk a zombie outbreak just to see a petty robber nommed.

I'm not against the idea by any means but it just doesn't seem all that needed at the moment since there are a few gameplay elements in place that allows the control of undead. It's likely best left until we see religion/culture more fleshed out so burial practices are much more important.

Suggestions are suggestions, no one is demanding a time constraint, nor do the existence of some ideas cancel out others.

Confining the dead to rest in tombs and such would carry the same weight of survival whilst retaining the ancient concept of bury the dead, or they will come back to eat you.

Ok here goes.

Right now in places where the dead come back to life, burial is impossible. The corpse items inside come back to life and waltz out of their graves. Yet one could just as easily put them in a cage. Why this is possible with the cage but not the burial receptacle is a really peculiar thing. The gameplay elements that "allow for control of the undead" all end in their vaporization. There is no alternative. This would be one.

Maybe to allow for potential Fun, dead bodies should be able to escape ordinary coffins and caskets, but sarcophagi and maybe some special variant of a coffin could lock them inside? Allowing for their release by building destroyers, necromancers who get to your tombs and the odd tantrum-dwarf.

Coffins with latches on them are probably good idea. Though those should be able to be opened by non-citizens so that necros in graveyard be Fun still.

yeah.  lockable coffins=a much needed feature.  i savescummed over the issue when I discovered a coffin wasn't enough.

Some way to block coffins would be a good idea. Maybe as simple as a rock block put over the lid, maybe as complex as a lock. But something is a good idea, and it shouldn't be 100% free.

You can always surround the coffin with fortifications. Trap a necromancer nearby and you have an amusing training apparatus for marks-dwarfs.

Seems reasonable, as long as the locked coffin requires more materials than ordinary coffins. There should be extra effort involved in protecting against rising. And I agree with everyone that says that this shouldn't stop necros.
