Here are two things I've always wondered-
1.  If some of the early human technology was too advanced for people to come up with, how did the aliens that came up with it discover it?
2.  How do we know that WE aren't the forerunner species with the hyper-advanced technology that's going to raid the other planets?  People always assume that we will be the inferior species.

They were taught intelligence by even more ancient precursors. It's aliens all the way down.
Those poor, poor first precursors.  They had to bang rocks together until one of them accelerated to faster then light travel.

Alternatively: The last species in line time travels back to the first species in order to have someone to teach.

And so the life cicle begins again. Not that it would cause a paradox anyway...

My guess? Aliens totally exist, but they all died before they discovered interstellar travel. Or they died after they discovered interstellar travel.

Would be kind of sad if there was only ever one civilised species in the galaxy. We'd find nothing but ruins and simple life out there (if we ever get out there).

Eh. Don't think of it as sad. Think of it as... an opportunity. To populate the universe with sentients of varied and improbable physiologies. I mean, it's not like we need an excuse to play creator god. But an excuse doesn't hurt. And "There's somewhere to put them" is... sufficient.

I just find the idea of all those ruins kind of bleak; A derelict galaxy. It would be interesting but far less so than extant civilisations.

If it's any consolation we'll probably die out like the rest of them before we find the shallow graves of a billion-trillion aliens.  ;D

On the flip side, we get the chance to leave some really fucking bizarre relics for future starfarers.

This, so much. Military R&D is always ahead of what's actually in the field. There almost certainly have been coverups, but they're covering up secret testing, not aliens. Actually, the people responsible for keeping these things under wraps probably love all the conspiracy theorists who have hooked onto something which is so blatantly loony.
Anyone read Popular Mechanics? They showcased the photographs and a partial design of a 'UFO'. Working flying saucers exist, but they're utter shite. They can't lift more than a few feet without keeling over and falling to pieces.

Why not take the third option: The discovery of interstellar travel killed them because... they accidentally warped their planet out of orbit?
