Completely serious question: are you dyslexic?  If so, general advice may not apply as well.  I'm pretty sure that there are specific techniques that are used to help people with dyslexia overcome it, and these probably vary depending on what specific challenges you face with it.  Afraid I don't know any of these, since neither I nor anyone I know intimately has dyslexia.

Otherwise, the suggestion to read and write more is about the best I can give.  Like anything else, practice makes perfect.

Yeah, my mom is severely dyslexic and this sounds like her.  I'd try to see if you can't get it looked into.

I'm afraid the only thing that works is lots of practice, find something you might come to enjoy reading and stick with that for a while.

You might also check to see if things written in Comic Sans and other such fonts are easier for you.

that does seemt o be the genrall consensus

But it is not true. There are better ways to improve your reading speed. Sadly out of the tons of books and guides that promise speed reading over 90% is unscientific bullshit. I'd recommend the following course of actions:
First measure how fast/slow you really are. Most office programs can count words/characters and you could print out some pages where you know how many words are on them and than see how many words you can read in 10 minutes. That gives you an idea about how you compare to the average citizen. If it's really way below I'd recommend seeing a doctor. Even if you are not dyslexic they should still be able to point you to some ways to improve your speed.

You could also try using a ruler. I've seen some people do that because it helps their brain focus on the words they can actually see, instead of making them try to only focus on some words amidst a page full of words. Just keep it under the line you're reading and move it down when you move to the next line. See if that improves your reading speed.

I'm a very fast reader and typeist, but when i was a kid I had trouble reading one line after another, my eyes would skip all over the place. My parents got me some sorta thing that acted like a ruler, showing me where I was while blocking out other words.

Perhaps that might help?

The ruler thing works (my sister is dyslexic and she does exactly that, though it doesn't prevent her misreading some words) and after a while you shouldn't need it. Perhaps try reading out loud to yourself to help your brain make those sort of connections that help you tell different words apart.
