Third, a certain NPC that sells items that boost your stats and skills refreshes their inventory each time you level up. That means the earlier you get to that NPC the bigger the advantage to your characters, as the bonuses aren't retroactive for previous levels.

Aaarggghhh, why did you tell me this?! I can't restrain the minmaxer inside of me, but I don't want to start over again! I've started over three times already!!

(It's okay... I'm okay. You're okay. I'm not mad at you. But I am kinda mad at you. :P)

Apparently the refreshing has been taken away with one of the recent patches :(

Quote from: Patch v1.0.72
-The seller of secrets now only has 1 ability book and 1 stat book instead of regenerating those

Contrary to the patch notes, the seller of secrets is still refreshing every time one of your main characters levels(need to talk to her with the leveled character to make the refresh happen). This has been widely acknowledged on the main forums.

I think I'm going to continue exploiting it for my first game, then when I'm finished I'll start a hard-mode run and not abuse it.

Alright, so, I've given this a try.  Restarted a few times, cause messing with AI personalities, before I was smart enough to just wiki what each AI personality tends toward.  (Like not realizing loyal agrees with you no matter what and free opposes you at everything.)
Anyways, I figured I'd have one of the characters being the semi-opposed/goodie two shoes to my natural tendency toward pragmatism/ruthlessness.  It is probably going to be the priest AI.  While I guess the main would be Rascal or Manic if I screw up and control the Priest during a decision.

I'm not opposed to doing a few rounds of multiplayer with someone.  I'll probably play a bastardly rogue-ish 2-hander.  (Cause I want to backstab with a giant axe or something similar down the line...)  I'm not too into pickpocketing/lockpicking stuff and probably won't tree into a magic field.  Cause I'm a muggle.

Well Zangi I am looking for a play partner. Though feel free to say no, I know I don't mesh well with everyone.

Backstabbing is only possible with daggers, knives, and rapiers. You can sneak-attack with a 2-hander though. With the trait and high sneaking skill, that could be extremely effective.

I'd urge you to reconsider magic. With only one ability point in a magic field, you can summon meatshield pets, heal, buff allies, and CC enemies, all of which are highly effective without investing into intelligence. There are some fights where stealth just isn't an option, and it's good to have a backup plan.

Yep some spells are not enhanced by intelligence and some others only have a minimum and never improve.

Well, if I can't backstab, surprise large object to the face is fine too.
Warrior tree has a heal.  More dramatic having to rush to someone to save their life... >.>  Should have high movement by virtue of putting points into rogue stats/gear anyways.
I don't really care about having pets.  I can get some CC skills in the scoundrel/warrior tree.  And if I really need to shoot stuff, I can throw a point or two into marksman.
(Yea, I'm not really optimized here...so it just means I gotta be more awesome in other respects.)
Well, anyways I am not really far into the game at all.  So I don't know about the virtues of anything better.

Sure we could I reckon.  Steam ID: Zangi_of_Nydus and we can arrange something.
EDIT: And we can post about how fabulously our characters get along or something too.

Aerothurge has one of the best utility spells in the game right off the bat, teleporting your enemies (and friends). The teleportee is damaged on impact and anyone very close to the impact spot can be damaged. You can put melee enemies out of the picture for a bit (sometimes practically permanently) at key moments, teleport enemy mages/archers into range, put a burning enemy into a pool of oil/poison cloud/etc. Basically the epitome of making use of the environment. I've been playing with 2 wizards and it actually just occurred to me ~level 10 I should totally put a point in it on my other two rather than saving up 3 points for something like +10% damage.

Teleport is pretty awesome, but also really expensive.

So far my favorite low-level utility spell is Witchcraft's Oath of Desecration, increasing an allies' damage by 50% for 3 turns, and costing only 3 AP. You basically gain an extra 1.5 turns for less than half of the AP regenerated in a turn!

For the record, Nullify Resistances is also really, really good.  It'll stop enemies healing from favoured damage types and even if that's not an issue chances are it's going to be a decent damage boost for one or more party members.

Actually it is a LOT better then it sounds due to the way armor works in this game.

Since it multiplies it before armor is rolled I believe.

But yeah Oath of Descecration is amazing, been trying to find it... but the shops aren't selling it currently... dang.

Witchcraft has most of the best buffing and debuffing spells with earth in close second (but earth makes up for it in other ways, and its best buddy is Fire)... though all spells have good buffs (I haven't seen a good water one yet though). The only thing Witchcraft doesn't seem to do well is attacking.

Water is mostly about healing and freezing.

Basically with water, you want to start every fight with rain. Then you freeze everything. Or if you are running air as well, then you stun everything as well.

Water + ice elemental = everything frozen

I have just discovered that levels are not, in fact, capped at 20. I'm not sure why I assumed as much, but this was a pleasant surprise.

I don't know either as a NPC you meet early on is level 26
